It is a useful starting point for identifying a character, but it is not a complete index of every speaking or interactable entity: Spirits and unnamed NPCs have separate pages.
Who counts as an NPC in the Hollow Knight Wiki?
The named-NPC index is a directory, not a full census of every character-like presence in the game. It separates characters into five practical groups: merchants, Nailmasters, wanderers, quest NPCs, and miscellaneous characters. Interactable Spirits and unnamed NPCs are routed to separate pages, so the index’s categories describe its own scope rather than every possible interaction.

Use the Hollow Knight Wiki NPC index to browse the categories and open an individual character page when you need encounter details or a walkthrough. The index is mainly a classification and link list.
What do the different NPC categories do?
| Category | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Merchants | Offer goods or services in exchange for Geo or other items. |
| Nailmasters | Teach the Knight Nail Arts. |
| Wanderers | Appear in multiple locations as the Knight explores. |
| Quest NPCs | Are characters the Knight may need to seek out or assist through tasks. |
| Miscellaneous characters | Primarily provide lore or aid. |
These categories are most useful as a guide to interaction: whether you are looking for a service, a combat technique, a character encountered in different regions, or someone connected to a task or story. The index does not establish a definitive total of all NPCs, and a count would depend on whether separate Spirits and unnamed characters were included.

Where do you find Elderbug?
Elderbug stands beside the Bench in Dirtmouth. He is an early welcoming presence who offers advice and warns the Knight about the kingdom below. His dialogue introduces the town as a place whose other residents have disappeared, making him a useful first example of an NPC whose role is primarily guidance and atmosphere rather than commerce or combat instruction. Quirrel is an inquisitive explorer who recurs in several parts of Hallownest. His listed encounters include the Temple of the Black Egg, Lake of Unn, Queen’s Station, Mantis Village, City of Tears, Crystal Peak, Deepnest, the Teacher’s Archives, and Blue Lake. That movement makes him a clear example of the wanderer category.

At the Teacher’s Archives, Quirrel helps during the encounter with Uumuu by puncturing the creature’s outer membrane. He then explains his connection to Monomon and removes the additional protection she placed on herself. Consult the Quirrel character page for the full encounter sequence and location-specific details.
Late-game spoiler: Quirrel’s final encounter
Spoilers: Quirrel’s final encounter is at Blue Lake. He speaks of feeling at peace there; after the Knight leaves, he disappears, and his nail is visible beside the lake. This detail is best avoided if you are trying to discover his story without spoilers.
