Dark Souls III’s NPCs include Firelink Shrine merchants and trainers, quest characters encountered across Lothric, hostile invaders, summonable allies, covenant figures, and characters from both expansions. The directory below is organized to help you find a character by role and location; spoiler-marked guidance explains why some quest encounters depend on your choices.

How to use this NPC directory

The Dark Souls III NPC directory groups characters into major NPCs, minor NPCs, Ashes of Ariandel characters, and The Ringed City characters. Its entries list locations and roles, so use the role descriptions to distinguish a service NPC from someone tied to a quest, covenant, invasion, or summon. These categories can overlap: one character may appear in more than one gameplay capacity.

The overview below is spoiler-light. The sections marked Spoilers discuss quest steps and consequences; skip them if you want to discover character stories without guidance. Prima Games likewise cautions blind-playthrough readers to avoid its NPC chapter, which covers progression, gifts, and dangers (Prima Games’ NPC questline guide overview).

Major NPCs: services and central quest characters

Many of the characters most useful to find early or revisit regularly are based at Firelink Shrine. Others become relevant as you travel through the world. These examples indicate the directory’s range rather than listing every entry.

NPC Role Where to look
Blacksmith Andre Reinforces and infuses equipment and Estus. Firelink Shrine
Fire Keeper Enables leveling and can cure hollowing. Firelink Shrine
Cornyx Pyromancy trainer. Found in the world; later associated with Firelink Shrine.
Irina of Carim Miracle trainer. Found in the world; later associated with Firelink Shrine.
Greirat Merchant. Found in the world; can become associated with Firelink Shrine.
Shrine Handmaid Merchant. Firelink Shrine
Yoel of Londor Begins the Lord of Hollows questline. Found in the world; his quest is tied to later events at Firelink Shrine.

For a precise location, use the character’s entry in the roster: several NPCs move or appear at multiple points as their story progresses, so a single location label may not describe every encounter.

Minor NPCs: covenants, invasions, and summons

“Minor” describes a directory section, not necessarily a character’s importance. These entries include covenant leaders, hostile invaders, summonable characters, and figures whose role may center on dialogue or an item drop.

  • Company Captain Yorshka leads the Blades of the Darkmoon covenant.
  • Creighton the Wanderer appears as an invader during Sirris’s questline.
  • Holy Knight Hodrick is listed as both an invader and a summon.

When searching for one of these characters, check both the role and the location: an NPC associated with an invasion or summon may not function like a stationary merchant or trainer.

Expansion characters

The roster has separate sections for both Dark Souls III expansions, Ashes of Ariandel and The Ringed City. The Ringed City, described by publisher Bandai Namco as the game’s final expansion, includes figures such as Amnesiac Lapp, a hollowing knight seeking lost memories, and Shira, Knight of Filianore. See the official Dark Souls III page for the publisher’s framing of the expansions. Consult the corresponding expansion section of the NPC directory when you need a DLC character’s location or role.

Spoilers: why questline steps can be conditional

Story spoilers below. Quest guidance is a sequence of conditional encounters, not a guarantee that every character will appear in one fixed place. The community-maintained quest progression guide documents the intertwined stories of Anri of Astora, Yuria of Londor, and Yoel of Londor as an example.

Anri of Astora and Horace

Anri’s progression includes encounters on the Road of Sacrifices, at Firelink Shrine after the Deacons of the Deep, in the Catacombs of Carthus, and in Irithyll. The account’s branching details include what the player tells Anri and whether Horace is killed; those choices can alter the outcome. Treat the guide as route information rather than a blind-playthrough recommendation, and follow its steps in sequence if you want a particular branch.

Lord of Hollows route

The documented route begins by recruiting Yoel and using “Draw out True Strength” to receive five Dark Sigils and trigger Yuria’s appearance. It then intersects with Anri’s route. One specified branch says not to attack the pilgrim in the Church of Yorshka if pursuing that ending. Because these steps can affect story outcomes, read the full sequence before acting rather than relying on an isolated instruction.
