Hints for Connections #432
These clues point to the four categories without giving away the full groups.
- Yellow: Think of a middling or merely acceptable assessment.
- Green: Four entries are abbreviations for U.S. states.
- Blue: Look for types of boots, including a dance-fashion style.
- Purple: Consider things that rise and fall, literally or cyclically.
Answers for Friday, August 16
Spoilers below. Connections gives players 16 words to sort into four groups of four. The solution for puzzle #432 is:
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | MEH | AVERAGE, FAIR, OK, SO-SO |
| Green | U.S. STATE ABBREVIATIONS | HI, MA, OR, PA |
| Blue | KINDS OF BOOTS | ANKLE, COWBOY, GO-GO, THIGH-HIGH |
| Purple | THINGS THAT GO UP AND DOWN | ELEVATOR, SUN, TIDE, YO-YO |
Why OK is not in the state group
OK can stand for Oklahoma, which makes it a natural trap. In this board, however, it means “okay” and fits the middling-assessment group with AVERAGE, FAIR, and SO-SO. The state-abbreviation set is HI, MA, OR, and PA.

How Connections works
Each daily board presents 16 words; the goal is to find four groups of four that share a connection. The categories are color-coded, from yellow (easiest) to purple (trickiest), and some words can appear to fit more than one category. The New York Times Help Center says the daily game is released “at midnight in your timezone.” You can play on NYTimes.com and through NYT apps.
