Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, so its U.S. preorder window and launch prices are historical—not current offers. At launch, the U.S. console cost $449.99 and the bundle with Mario Kart World cost $499.99. A separate Japan-only game-choice bundle is scheduled for November 12, 2026. Check live retailer prices, stock and terms before buying.
How much did the Nintendo Switch 2 cost at launch?
Nintendo announced these U.S. manufacturer’s suggested retail prices on April 18, 2025. They describe the launch offer, not what a retailer charges today.

|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 system | $449.99 | Console and included system accessories |
| Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle | $499.99 | Console and a download code for Mario Kart World |
| Mario Kart World, sold separately | $79.99 | Digital game |
The bundle was $50 more than the standalone system, compared with the game’s $79.99 standalone U.S. launch MSRP. These figures do not establish current prices or availability. Nintendo’s launch announcement and U.S. pricing page provide the historical details.
Should you get the Switch 2 with the Mario Kart World bundle?
Choose based on whether you want the game, not on the word “bundle” alone. If you planned to buy Mario Kart World anyway, compare the bundle’s current price with the console and game sold separately. If you would not choose the game at its standalone price, the bundle’s launch-era discount is not a reason by itself to buy it. Confirm the exact contents and price on the current listing; the 2025 offer does not establish today’s deal.

When did Switch 2 preorders start, and what happened?
Nintendo said U.S. retail preorders would begin April 24, 2025, ahead of the June 5 launch. Those dates have passed; launch-era preorder instructions are not a live opportunity.
During that preorder period, The Associated Press reported that demand was high and participating retailers’ listings sold out quickly. Nintendo warned that My Nintendo Store orders were not guaranteed to arrive by launch day and suggested that buyers seeking better odds of launch-date availability visit participating retailers. This is a dated account of that launch, not evidence of current scarcity, inventory, or delivery guarantees. The Associated Press’s launch-preorder report describes the experience.
How should you compare Nintendo Store and retailer purchase terms?
Check the terms for the actual seller and item before paying. Nintendo’s Americas support guidance distinguishes digital game preorders from physical-item pre-purchases through Nintendo Store; it does not establish the policies of independent retailers.
| Purchase through Nintendo | Payment timing | Fulfillment or cancellation detail |
|---|---|---|
| Digital game preorder through Nintendo eShop | Full amount charged no sooner than seven days before release | Digital purchase; see Nintendo’s current terms for the specific listing |
| Physical-item pre-purchase through Nintendo Store | Full amount charged immediately | Ships one to three business days after release; Nintendo says to contact support to cancel |
For any retailer, verify whether the listing is a preorder or in-stock purchase, when payment is taken, the stated delivery or pickup date, cancellation rules, and the seller’s identity. A launch-era availability report cannot substitute for those current terms. See Nintendo’s preorder payment guidance.

What should you check before buying a Switch 2?
Included hardware and storage
Nintendo lists the console, Joy-Con 2 controllers, grip and straps, dock, HDMI cable, AC adapter, and USB-C charging cable as included. The system has 256 GB of internal storage. For more space, Nintendo specifies microSD Express cards; do not assume a standard microSD card will work. Nintendo’s U.S. launch price list showed a Samsung 256 GB microSD Express card at $59.99 on April 18, 2025, a historical MSRP rather than a current quote. Check the card type and current price before adding one to your purchase. Nintendo’s launch announcement provides the system details, and its U.S. pricing page lists launch-era accessories.
Protection and other extras
A carrying case and screen protector are optional. Nintendo’s U.S. launch list priced a Switch 2 case and screen protector at $39.99 on April 18, 2025; check the current price and make sure any case is designed for Switch 2 rather than the original Switch. You do not need to add accessories simply because they appear beside a console listing.
Older games and accessories
Nintendo says compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games can be played on Switch 2, but some games may not be supported or fully compatible. Original Switch Joy-Con controllers and peripherals such as the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can be used wirelessly. Check the specific game or accessory before relying on it; compatibility is not universal. Nintendo’s compatibility information is the place to confirm details.
GameChat and online membership
Nintendo’s launch announcement said GameChat would be available without a Nintendo Switch Online membership only through the end of March 2026, with membership required afterward. That free-access period has ended. Check Nintendo’s current service terms for membership requirements and costs rather than relying on launch-era claims. Nintendo’s launch announcement records the original timing.

Should you buy a digital or physical game?
Compare the exact game listing and your preferences. Physical copies can matter if you value lending or keeping a cartridge; digital purchases avoid handling a cartridge but use system storage. The best choice depends on the specific game’s price, how you play, and how much storage you have available.
Nintendo Support says that beginning in May 2026, new Nintendo-published digital titles exclusive to Switch 2 have an MSRP different from their physical versions. The notice does not establish a universal direction or amount, so do not assume digital is always cheaper—or more expensive. Compare the current digital and physical listings for the title you want. Nintendo Support provides the pricing notice.
Is the new Japan Switch 2 bundle available outside Japan?
Nintendo announced on October 6, 2026 a Japan-only “Nintendo Switch 2 Japanese-Language System (Japan Only) Choose-Your-Game Bundle,” scheduled for release on November 12, 2026. Its Japanese manufacturer’s suggested retail price is 63,980 yen, tax included. It includes a system and a download code for one of three games: Mario Kart World, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort for Switch 2, or Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream for Switch.
Redeeming the code requires a Nintendo Account and internet access, and the code is valid through March 31, 2027. Nintendo identifies the product as Japan-only. Do not treat it as an offer in the United States or another market, or assume an import will suit your language and region needs without checking those restrictions. Nintendo’s Japanese announcement gives the bundle’s terms.
