Reports in January and February 2025 described claims that someone offered a pre-release Nintendo Switch 2, but they did not verify that a genuine console changed hands. The strongest evidence cited was a screenshot of a purported seller conversation; the alleged buyer had not confirmed receiving the system.

Was a Nintendo Switch 2 actually sold on the black market?

That was never established by the reporting. The accounts described rumors and an alleged offer, not an independently confirmed purchase, delivery, or authenticated console. No verified images or operating-system footage of the supposed unit were presented in the coverage.

In its January 13, 2025 report, BGR traced the claim through statements attributed to accessory makers and online discussion. It said it could not locate the original post attributed to Chinese social-media leaker Kang, and characterized the story as speculation. BGR reproduced a machine-translated line attributed to that post: “In recent days the real console is available for trying on accessories. I dare not try.” That wording is BGR’s rendering, not an authenticated statement.

What did the February reports add?

On February 14, 2025, Nintendo Wire described a Xiaohongshu user’s screenshot of a purported seller conversation. The offer reportedly included a console, dock, and Joy-Con. Nintendo Wire explicitly noted that the user had not confirmed having the unit in hand.

Tom’s Hardware followed on February 15, also describing an alleged offer relayed through Reddit and urging skepticism. Its account, like the earlier reporting, did not independently verify possession or a completed sale.

How much was the alleged offer?

Nintendo Wire reported that the screenshot showed an asking price of ¥290,000 RMB, which the outlet rendered as approximately $39,780. Tom’s Hardware rounded the reported figure to about $39,800. This was a quoted price in an alleged seller conversation—not a verified transaction, a confirmed sale price, or evidence of a typical market value.

Why might someone offer a pre-release console?

The reports floated accessory fit-testing as a possible reason someone might seek early access: makers could check whether cases or peripherals fit the hardware. That is a proposed commercial rationale, not evidence that a console was available or that a transaction took place.

Does Nintendo’s current retail listing prove the earlier claim?

No. Nintendo of America’s product page now presents Switch 2 as a marketed system, but ordinary retail availability does not authenticate a separate 2025 allegation about a black-market offer. As listed on Nintendo’s US page accessed October 8, 2026, the Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World Bundle has a $549.99 MSRP. The page also lists a Nintendo Switch 2 + Nintendo Switch Sports Resort Bundle at $529.99 MSRP, with availability shown as October 22, 2026. Those are current US product-page details, not evidence about the alleged pre-release unit. Nintendo Switch 2: Power Up Your Play
