Yes. Before Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, Nintendo confirmed that it would play compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. The qualification matters: some titles may not work or may have limited functionality, so check the current compatibility information for a specific game.
What Nintendo confirmed before Switch 2 launched
On January 16, 2025, Nintendo announced that Switch 2 would play its own exclusive games as well as physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Nintendo also stated: “Certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” Nintendo’s announcement therefore confirmed backward compatibility, but not universal compatibility.

Nintendo reiterated the scope on April 2, 2025, when it announced the June 5, 2025 release date: Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Switch games, with exceptions. Its launch announcement also described Virtual Game Cards for managing eligible digital purchases across systems. That account feature is separate from whether an individual game works on Switch 2.
How to play games you already own
Physical games
Insert the original Nintendo Switch game card into Switch 2. Whether the game is fully supported depends on the individual title.

Digital games
Link the Nintendo Account that owns the game, then download the title. Nintendo’s support guidance describes both access methods and warns that some games may not work or may not be fully compatible.
Some compatible games have free updates or paid upgrades that add content or improve performance on Switch 2. These are title-specific; compatibility does not mean every game receives an upgrade. Check the game’s current listing before assuming an update is available.

How to check whether a particular game works
- Look up the title in Nintendo’s current compatibility information for your region. Nintendo advises checking a game’s status before buying it with Switch 2 in mind. Nintendo UK’s compatibility page includes per-game guidance; use the corresponding regional information where available.
- Read the qualification, not just the compatibility label. A game may be fully playable, have a feature or mode that needs an original controller, work differently, or be unsupported.
- For a third-party game, also check with its publisher. Nintendo directs players to the publisher for specific third-party compatibility information.
Nintendo explains that Switch 2’s hardware differs from the original Switch. Its compatibility information may change as testing and updates continue; Nintendo notes that some titles may take longer to assess, have partial-functionality issues, or remain unsupported.
When original Joy-Con or accessories matter
Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot attach to the console. Some games depend on the original controllers’ shape, fit, or features. Nintendo says original Joy-Con need to be charged using a Nintendo Switch console or a compatible Joy-Con charging grip or two-way charging stand. Check the game and accessory requirements before relying on an old setup.

Nintendo UK lists examples where particular features or modes are affected. These examples do not mean that each entire game is unplayable:
- Ring Fit Adventure: Joy-Con 2 do not attach to the included Ring-Con; original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly and attach to it.
- 1-2-Switch, Game Builder Garage, Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training for Nintendo Switch, and WarioWare: Move It!: modes that use the original right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera require an original Joy-Con (R).
- Nintendo Switch Sports: Joy-Con 2 do not fit the leg strap, so Football Shoot-Out requires original Joy-Con.
- Nintendo Labo: some Toy-Con accessories cannot hold Switch 2 or connect to its antenna as designed, changing the experience; Nintendo says original Joy-Con are required for the listed Labo titles.
- Everybody 1-2-Switch!: Nintendo says reduced force-feedback vibration on Joy-Con 2 may make the Joy-Con Hide & Seek minigame more difficult.
The same compatibility guidance warns that Joy-Con 2 cannot be used with original Joy-Con accessories including the strap, grip, charging grip, wheel, leg strap, Ring-Con, and battery pack. Accessory fit and game requirements are separate from whether the game software itself is supported. Check Nintendo’s current regional listing for the details that apply to your title.

Nintendo says Nintendo Accounts and associated online features can be used on Switch 2. An existing Nintendo Switch Online membership can be used on linked Switch 2 or Switch consoles, although some services are Switch 2-specific; Nintendo names the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics library as an example. Nintendo’s Switch 2 online-services information gives the service context. Account access and membership do not override a game’s compatibility status.
