The Nintendo Switch 2’s C Button opens GameChat. Nintendo teased the button on April 1, 2025, without explaining its purpose; the company revealed the answer the next day. The console launched on June 5, 2025, so the mystery belongs to the run-up to launch—not a feature that remains unknown.
What does the Switch 2 C Button do?
Pressing the C Button on the right Joy-Con 2 starts GameChat while you play. Nintendo developer Kouichi Kawamoto described it as “the button you press to use GameChat,” in an April 2, 2025 interview with Nintendo: Ask the Developer Vol. 16: Nintendo Switch 2 — Part 3.

GameChat brings voice chat and game-screen sharing together. Nintendo says a session can include up to 12 people, with up to four sharing their screens at once. The C Button is a shortcut to the feature; it is not a camera button, and you do not need a camera for voice chat or screen sharing.
What happened before the reveal?
On April 1, 2025, Nintendo’s Nintendo Today! app posted a video featuring a close-up of the C Button and a short jingle, ahead of the Switch 2 Direct the following day. The video did not explain what the button did, prompting speculation. Those theories were guesses, not confirmed features. Nintendo Life’s report on the teaser captured the question audiences were asking: “What do you think the ‘C’ button will do?”

Nintendo answered on April 2: the button launches GameChat. The company also announced that Switch 2 would release on June 5, 2025. Nintendo’s announcement established the button’s purpose as part of the system reveal.
What can you do in GameChat?
- Voice chat: Talk with up to 12 people in a session.
- Share a game screen: Up to four participants can share screens at one time.
- Use video: Video features require a compatible USB camera. Nintendo lists the separately sold Nintendo Switch 2 Camera as one example; a camera is optional for GameChat’s other functions. See Nintendo’s GameChat overview for feature details.
Nintendo support says the C Menu can also be opened from the HOME Menu or by pressing the C Button on Joy-Con 2, Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, or Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube Controller. During GameChat, the menu includes controls such as screen sharing. Nintendo limits simultaneous sharing of video and/or screens to four users in a room. Nintendo’s C Menu support page describes the controls.

Does GameChat require Nintendo Switch Online?
Nintendo announced that GameChat would be available without a Nintendo Switch Online membership through March 31, 2026, and that membership would be required afterward. That no-membership period has ended. Nintendo’s current overview also says a membership is required, while noting that online-feature availability and terms may vary by country.
