The Nintendo Switch 2 has two USB-C ports, and the top one lets you charge the console while it is set up in tabletop mode. Nintendo also says the top port can connect accessories, including a compatible USB-C camera for GameChat. That is a useful convenience improvement—not a documented increase in battery life or charging speed.
What the second USB-C port changes
Nintendo assigns different roles to the two connectors: the bottom port charges the console and connects it to the Switch 2 dock; the top port connects accessories and/or charges the console. The practical difference is that a cable no longer has to occupy the bottom connector when you want to charge during tabletop play. Nintendo describes this use in its April 2, 2025 Switch 2 announcement and lists the port roles in its technical specifications.
Tabletop mode means taking the console out of the dock, opening its rear stand and placing it on a flat surface. With the top port available for power, you can keep the console propped up and charging instead of routing the charging cable through the bottom port. This is particularly useful when playing with detached controllers or sharing the screen, though the benefit is flexibility rather than extra play time.
Accessories can use the top port, too
Nintendo specifically names a compatible USB-C camera as an accessory for the top port. Its separately sold Nintendo Switch 2 Camera connects to the console by USB-C and can be used to share players’ expressions through GameChat. The camera leaflet depicts a tabletop setup and shows a privacy shutter that stops video transmission, as well as an LED that indicates camera operation. The official specifications describe the top port as supporting accessories and/or charging, but do not establish whether it supports video output. Nintendo separately specifies HDMI for TV-mode output, so the extra USB-C connector should not be treated as a documented video-output port.
Charging adapters: what works and what does not
Nintendo says both the Switch 2 AC adapter (model NGN-01) and the original Switch AC adapter (HAC-002) can charge Switch 2 when connected directly to the console. The older HAC-002 adapter cannot power the console for docked TV mode because its power output differs. Nintendo’s charging guidance also says an unlicensed adapter rated at 54 W or more may be used, but Nintendo has not tested and evaluated such products and warns they may have compatibility problems. That is not a guarantee that every high-wattage USB-C charger will work.

The original Switch dock and original adjustable charging stand are not compatible with Switch 2. The original adapter’s ability to charge the console directly does not make the old dock suitable for TV mode. Nintendo’s compatibility information and play mode guidance distinguish these cases.

Nintendo’s published figures give context for charging, but do not attribute a measurable gain to the second port. The console takes approximately three hours to charge fully when it is in sleep mode. Estimated battery life is approximately 2–6.5 hours, depending on the games played. Neither figure says that the top port charges faster or extends battery life; the documented advantage is being able to charge while using the console in tabletop mode.

Switch 2 supports a maximum resolution of 1920 × 1080 in handheld and tabletop modes, according to Nintendo’s specifications. That resolution is a console display specification, not a benefit of the additional connector.
