That shortage statement describes the launch period in 2025, not current availability. Nintendo’s official cumulative total later reached 23.68 million hardware units worldwide as of June 30, 2026.
What did Nintendo mean by “over 6 million”?
The 6 million milestone was consumer sell-through: more than 6 million Switch 2 consoles had reached customers worldwide in the seven weeks after the system launched on June 5, 2025. Nintendo reported that milestone in August 2025 and said demand was exceeding supply in many countries. The statement was Nintendo’s description of conditions then; it does not establish that shortages remain widespread today. Nintendo’s August 2025 explanatory material also said the company would strengthen its production and supply systems.

How many Switch 2 consoles has Nintendo sold since launch?
Nintendo’s official cumulative sales page reports 23.68 million Switch 2 hardware units worldwide as of June 30, 2026, alongside 58.17 million software units. These are cumulative “Total Unit Sales” figures, not a current retailer-stock count. Nintendo’s dedicated video game sales page is the source for both totals.
The milestones show how the total grew. They use different reporting measures, so consumer sell-through and hardware sales reported in financial results should not be treated as interchangeable:

Could Nintendo keep up with demand?
At launch, Nintendo said it could not meet demand in many countries. In its August 2025 material, the company said: “Currently, demand for Nintendo Switch 2 is exceeding supply in many countries, and we regret the inconvenience this is causing our consumers.” It said it would continue strengthening production and supply systems. In its first-quarter results, Nintendo likewise said it was strengthening production to increase supply in response to demand that had surpassed expectations. The first-quarter financial results report that response.
The sales milestones that followed show strong cumulative sales, but they do not reveal whether supply met demand in a particular place or at a particular time. Nintendo’s 2025 statement does not establish current availability, and the cited sales figures do not provide a shortage rate, count of unfilled orders, retailer inventory, or wait times by country.

Is the Switch 2 still hard to find?
The available official figures cannot answer that for October 2026 or for an individual country. Nintendo’s latest cumulative figure cited here is dated June 30, 2026; a global sales total is not a live inventory measure. For a buying decision, check local retailers or Nintendo’s regional store for current stock rather than relying on the 2025 launch-period shortage statement.
