Some No Man’s Sky players want Comm Balls removed or restricted during Expeditions, especially around portals and other shared objectives. Their complaints center on visual clutter, repetitive or unwelcome messages, and markers that can distract from navigation. Other players say the markers point to useful locations or add welcome notes. Public discussions show a recurring disagreement—not a measured community consensus—and Hello Games has not announced a Comm Ball policy change in the official Expedition material cited here.
Why Comm Balls cluster around Expedition objectives
Hello Games describes Expeditions as a way to play No Man’s Sky in which every player beginning an expedition starts on the same planet. That shared starting point can bring players into the same places and give them reason to leave markers near common destinations. The official Expeditions update explains the shared setup, but does not specifically discuss Comm Balls or say that every objective will become crowded.
What critics say is wrong with them
In an October 24, 2024 Reddit thread titled “Sean…get rid of com balls for real,” a player described an Expedition portal surrounded by Comm Balls and said they left and returned because the objects and messages detracted from the experience. Replies called for an exclusion radius around Expedition points or a visibility toggle. This is one concrete account, not a measurement of how often the problem occurs.
Other players in a separate discussion have described the markers as visual noise, complained about irrelevant or objectionable messages, and objected to clutter near objectives. Their concern is that a shared destination can become harder to navigate or lose some of its intended atmosphere when many player-created markers accumulate. Those are reported experiences and opinions; the discussions do not verify a gameplay impact for all players.

Why some players want Comm Balls to stay
Other players say the markers can help identify useful points of interest, or that they enjoy finding positive or informative notes. In an October 2024 Reddit discussion about leaving a Comm Ball at an Expedition teleporter, replies included both practical appreciation and reassurance that the marker was harmless. A Steam Community discussion likewise records opposing views about clutter, usefulness, and visibility. These threads establish disagreement, not how common either position is.
What changes players are proposing
Suggestions in the cited discussions include limiting placement close to Expedition objectives, letting each player hide other players’ markers, or disabling Comm Balls in Expeditions. Each would address a different part of the dispute:

| Player-proposed option | Potential benefit | Trade-off or open question |
|---|---|---|
| Keep Comm Balls outside a radius around objectives | Could reduce clusters at portals and other shared destinations. | Would not remove markers elsewhere, and players who leave useful notes might lose access near those destinations. |
| Let players hide Comm Balls or multiplayer markers for themselves | Could reduce visual clutter without changing what other players see. | Would also hide potentially useful location tips; the cited discussions do not establish that such a control exists. |
| Disable Comm Balls in Expeditions | Would prevent this type of marker from accumulating in that mode. | Would remove both unwanted messages and helpful or welcome ones for everyone in Expeditions. |
These are proposals made by players, not announced Hello Games plans. The available official Expedition description does not say whether players can hide Comm Balls, whether changing multiplayer settings affects them, or whether the feature will be restricted. A Steam discussion includes user reports about multiplayer settings, but it is not official technical guidance and may not apply across versions or platforms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is removal the community consensus?
No reliable figure in the cited material measures support for removal, and forum posts are self-selected. The threads show that some players repeatedly ask for limits or an opt-out while others value the markers or consider them harmless. They do not establish that most No Man’s Sky players want Comm Balls removed, or that Hello Games has committed to a change.
