A chicken jockey is a baby zombie riding a chicken in Minecraft. The term became a movie-theater meme when Jack Black’s Steve shouted it during a boxing-ring scene in A Minecraft Movie. The reference was instantly legible to many fans, and clips of the line and audience reactions spread online; reports also described disruptive screenings, including food being thrown.
What a chicken jockey is in Minecraft
In the game, a chicken jockey is a baby zombie riding a chicken: an unusual combination of two familiar mobs. The Independent reported spawn odds of 0.25% in an environment without chickens and 0.4875% when chickens are present, attributing those mechanics to Minecraft Wiki. Those are secondary-source figures, not independently confirmed official statistics. The Independent, April 10, 2025.
What happens in the movie scene
In A Minecraft Movie, Jack Black plays Steve, who calls out “chicken jockey” when the creature appears in a boxing-ring scene. The line turns a niche-looking game encounter into a sudden, emphatic moment that fans can recognize. The Los Angeles Times reported that Black later addressed theater audiences with a request not to throw popcorn, then continued with Minecraft references and a shouted “chicken jockeys!” Los Angeles Times, April 14, 2025.
Why the line became a meme
A recognizable reference, delivered loudly
The phrase already belonged to Minecraft; the movie gave it a dramatic delivery and a visual payoff. Know Your Meme documents that users began remixing the trailer clip soon after its release, and that audience-reaction videos circulated once the film reached theaters. Fans could join in together
A 2025 analysis in Frontiers in Communication interprets the scene as an example of participatory meme culture: viewers recognized an existing fan reference and used the screening as a shared performance. That is the paper’s interpretation of the phenomenon, not proof that every child or every audience reacted the same way. Frontiers in Communication, 2025.
Some viewers were primed by TikTok
Washington Post reporter Gene Park wrote that children at a media screening were already familiar with TikTok memes before the film’s release. That observation describes one screening, not a representative survey of children or moviegoers. The Washington Post, April 15, 2025.

Excitement is not the same as disrupting a screening
Reports described audiences shouting or cheering, but also cases of popcorn and drinks being thrown, cleanup burdens, and audience members being removed. Jack Black’s reported request—“for today’s presentation of ‘A Minecraft Movie,’ please no throwing popped corn”—captures the distinction: quoting or laughing at the meme does not require throwing food or interrupting other people’s movie.
