First check whether the console is meant to connect over Wi-Fi or Ethernet: wireless setups should use Wireless Connection, while wired setups need the compatible Wii LAN Adapter, model RVL-015.
What does Wii error code 51421 mean?
Nintendo groups error 51421 with codes 51420–51422 as a problem detecting the Wii LAN Adapter. Nintendo also identifies incorrect adapter installation as a common cause. The error range concerns adapter detection, so first verify the connection type and setup rather than assuming you need a replacement.

How to troubleshoot error 51421
1. Check whether the Wii should use Wi-Fi or Ethernet
If you intend to use Wi-Fi, make sure the Wii’s Internet connection is set to Wireless Connection. Selecting the wrong connection option during setup can cause this error in a wireless setup.

- From the Wii Menu, open Wii Settings.
- Select Internet, then Connection Settings.
- Choose an available connection slot and select Wireless Connection.
- Select Search for an Access Point, choose your network, and enter its security key and matching security type when prompted.
- Save the settings and run the connection test.

2. Confirm the wired adapter is the Wii-compatible model
If you intend to connect by Ethernet, Nintendo identifies the licensed Wii LAN Adapter as model RVL-015. LAN adapters made for PCs or other devices are not compatible with the Wii. Power off the console before checking that the adapter is installed correctly.

Nintendo’s support article states: “The licensed Wii LAN Adapter will have the Model Number RVL- 015.” The space in “RVL- 015” reflects Nintendo’s published wording; the model is commonly written RVL-015.
3. Try another Ethernet cable
If the correct adapter is installed and the Wii still cannot detect it, try a different Ethernet cable between the adapter and the wired router. This is a troubleshooting step, not a reason to replace the cable before checking the connection type and adapter.

4. Check the router or network if the error persists
If a compatible, correctly installed adapter and a different cable do not resolve the problem, Nintendo says the network environment or router may be involved. Contact the router manufacturer for guidance on firmware updates or a factory reset rather than assuming a new router is required.

These checks apply when the intended connection is wireless; they are separate from detecting a wired LAN Adapter. Nintendo says the Wii supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and 802.11b/g. A router set to 802.11n-only mode needs to be changed to allow Wii connectivity.

- Confirm that the router broadcasts on 2.4 GHz and allows 802.11b/g.
- Move the Wii or router to reduce distance and obstacles; nearby devices or metal objects can cause interference.
- Check whether MAC filtering is blocking the Wii.
- Review the router’s security settings and firmware.
- Test another router or network, if available, to help identify whether the issue is specific to the current network.
