Onrush is an objective-based team combat game built with the speed and spectacle of an arcade racer. Winning is not about crossing a finish line first: teams score by wrecking rivals and completing mode objectives. Its online servers shut down on November 30, 2022, so the key present-day question is whether its offline play suits you.
What kind of game is Onrush?
Codemasters released Onrush for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2018. Xbox Wire and the PlayStation Store list June 4 as the release date; GameSpot lists June 5 as the first-release date. The available sources establish those two console editions, not a released PC edition. Xbox Wire’s release announcement and the PlayStation Store listing describe a high-contact arcade game where teams win through objectives, takedowns and spectacle rather than conventional racing positions.

That difference shapes every match. In a standard race, contact is usually a risk to avoid; in Onrush, hitting competitors is part of the design. Christina McGrath, Codemasters’ senior community manager, wrote, “You don’t get any penalties for hitting competitors in Onrush – you get rewarded!” Her PlayStation.Blog post captures the game’s deliberately aggressive approach.
How the team matches work
Vehicle classes, boost and Rush
GameSpot’s June 6, 2018 review describes Overdrive as a six-versus-six mode with up to eight vehicle classes. Players build boost through actions such as jumping, wrecking opponents and AI vehicles, performing bike tricks, or using class-specific abilities. Once enough boost is available, Rush delivers a speed burst and an ability tied to the selected class. That makes vehicle choice and the way you contribute to the team more important than simply holding a lead.

#1 Best Overall
- Day 1 Edition includes the 'Vortex' Buggy
- Takedowns - Speed off cliff edges and traverse huge ramps flying hundreds of feet through the sky; Land with immense force crushing any opposing team’s vehicles unfortunate enough to be below
- Verticality - Explore and use the environments to barrel roll hundreds of feet through the air, vault off cliff edges, boost off ramps and even dive round the side of a 400ft dam
- Rush - To gain an unworldly edge, build your bar and unleash the invulnerable, euphoric blast of speed and power RUSH; unique to each vehicle, this is like nothing seen in any racing game before
- Team Play - Be part of the team and attack as a pack working together to earn Points, XP, Medals, Boost and ultimately ‘RUSH’ to obliterate the opposing team
The cars and bikes are not just different-looking ways to race: classes bring distinct actions into a match. The game’s loop rewards using the terrain, taking risks and attacking opponents to generate boost, then choosing when to spend it. GameSpot called the mixture of arcade racing, takedowns, multi-vehicle chaos and class-based competition something other than a straightforward racing game: “Calling Onrush a racing game is a tad reductive and maybe even a little disingenuous.” Read GameSpot’s review.
Stampede keeps the pack together
In Stampede, players who fall too far behind are teleported back into the pack of racers and AI vehicles, according to GameSpot’s review. The mechanic limits the time spent stranded at the back and keeps the action focused on the group. It also reinforces the game’s priorities: speed and contact matter, but traditional race position is not the point.

- TAKEDOWNS: Takedowns are core to Onrush. Risk equals reward so take on the track and seek out the multitude of perilous but exciting routes through each track
Objectives, not a finish line
The PlayStation Store describes team victory, takedowns and spectacle as central to the experience. The exact objective depends on the mode, but the broader appeal is the same: create momentum for your team through aggressive driving and class abilities, rather than treating the match as a solo sprint to a finish line.
What critics thought of Onrush
Metacritic’s PS4 critic page displayed a 75/100 Metascore, labeled “Generally Favorable,” from 56 critic reviews when accessed October 8, 2026. The page classified 36 reviews as positive (67%), 16 as mixed (30%) and 2 as negative (4%). Those figures are a dated critic-score snapshot for PS4, not a measure of current player numbers or service activity. See Metacritic’s PS4 critic page.

The reviews reflected both the game’s strong central idea and reservations about how far it was developed. GameSpot labeled Onrush “Superb,” praising its objective-based team concept, vehicle-class variety, Stampede mechanic, visuals and track selection. Its review-era drawbacks included inconsistent takedowns and a scoring glitch in Lockdown; those are observations from its June 2018 review, not confirmation of how every feature behaves after later updates.
Metacritic’s individual scores show a range rather than a single unanimous view: the page lists scores of 95 from GamingTrend, 90 from Twinfinite and GameSpot, and 82 from IGN. More qualified reviews raised concerns about depth and repetition: IGN Italia wanted more from the class system and mode count, while IGN cited map repetition. The overall reception was favorable, but critics did not agree that the game had enough variety to sustain its ideas indefinitely.

Are Onrush’s online servers still available?
No. Electronic Arts announced that Onrush’s online servers would shut down on November 30, 2022. GameSpot reported the announcement on September 30, 2022, quoting EA as saying, “With player numbers in online modes dropping to low levels, we will be shutting down the servers from November 30, 2022.” EA gave low online-mode player numbers as the reason, but did not publish a player-count figure. GameSpot’s report includes EA’s announcement.
The PlayStation Store listing describes network play for 2–12 players and says PlayStation Plus is required for the full game’s online multiplayer. That listing records the game’s design and requirements, not present-day server availability. The announced shutdown date has passed, so its description should not be taken as evidence that online matches can still be played.

Can you still play Onrush offline?
EA’s 2022 statement said, “For onrush fans who want to continue playing, offline modes will continue to be available.” That is the publisher’s assurance at the time of the shutdown announcement; it is not a fresh verification of every mode or feature on every console today.
If you are considering Onrush now, base your decision on its offline experience rather than the old online player count or multiplayer features described on store pages. The available sources do not establish current digital-store availability, physical stock or a current price. They also do not verify the condition of every offline feature on a particular console.
Quick Recap
Who is Onrush for?
- A good fit: players who want fast, contact-heavy team action, vehicle classes, stunts and objectives instead of a conventional race to the finish.
- A weaker fit: players who mainly want online multiplayer, a traditional racing campaign or a large range of modes and tracks. Online servers are shut down, and critics raised concerns about content depth and repetition.
- Before buying or replaying: confirm that the edition and console you intend to use are available to you, and treat offline play—not online competition—as the relevant experience.
