The “NBA Jam ROM hack” in the headline is the Double Z Mod, a fan-made rework of NBA Jam: Tournament Edition for the Super Nintendo. A 2018 report describes restored artwork, roster changes and surprise characters; it does not establish that the mod is trending now. “Heating up” also refers to an in-game state after consecutive shots.
What is the Double Z Mod?
Hackaday’s December 3, 2018 report identifies the Double Z Mod as a modification of the SNES version of NBA Jam: Tournament Edition, credited to the handle eskayelle. It is a fan-made ROM hack, not an official Midway or Acclaim release. The report frames it around 1990s pop culture and says it restores or alters material from the game.

The original arcade NBA Jam arrived in 1993, according to Hackaday; 16-bit console versions followed that year, with Tournament Edition arriving the next year. A period SNES FAQ describes console features such as battery-backed records, an options screen, power-up icons, expanded rosters, dunks and sounds, while cautioning that some early information may be inaccurate.

- The 1992 Dream Team replacing the Rookies.
- Secret characters including Hulk Hogan, David Hasselhoff and Arnold Schwarzenegger as the T-800.
- Expanded rosters unlocked through a title-menu code.
Reported title-menu code
Hackaday gives the expanded-roster code as B, A, B, A, Up, Down, B, A, Left, Right, B, A. This is the sequence reported in that article; it has not been independently tested here.
What does “heating up” mean in NBA Jam?
“Heating up” is familiar NBA Jam gameplay language, not evidence of a current surge in interest around this particular hack. An informal SNES FAQ describes a player as heating up after two consecutive shots and going “on fire” after three; it says the on-fire state improves shooting chances and gives unlimited turbo. That FAQ is a player-authored reference, not official developer documentation.

The available reporting establishes the Double Z Mod’s features but gives no download count, active-player figure or popularity trend. The 2018 headline’s wording should therefore be read as a play on the game’s terminology, not a substantiated claim that the mod is currently gaining momentum.
How the reported patching process works
Hackaday describes dumping a copy of an original SNES cartridge to a computer with a device such as a Retrode, then applying an IPS patch with software such as LunarIPS. Those are examples from its account, not verified current instructions or a guarantee that a particular setup will work.

- Check the release documentation first. Confirm the required base-ROM revision and patch instructions. The specific base-ROM revision, patch version, operating-system requirements and compatibility list are not established in the available report.
- Dump your own cartridge, if following the reported hardware route. Hackaday names a Retrode as an example of a cartridge dumper. Verify that any SNES cartridge dumper works with your cartridge and computer before buying or using it.
- Apply the IPS patch to the matching game image. LunarIPS is the patching-software example in the report. Its mention does not establish that it is the required or currently supported tool for this release.
- Use the result only after checking compatibility. The report does not provide a confirmed compatibility matrix for hardware, emulators or ROM revisions, so consult the hack’s own release notes for current specifics.
Hackaday’s linked ROMhacking.net mod page and tools document could not be verified in the reviewed material. As a result, exact release details and current availability remain unconfirmed; do not assume that a patch found elsewhere is the same version.

Do not confuse the Double Z Mod with a separate retailer listing for a fan-made NBA Jam 2K22: Tournament Edition SNES cartridge, which the seller labels unofficial. That listing is not evidence that the Double Z Mod itself is sold as a cartridge. Any roster or hardware-compatibility statements on that separate product page are retailer claims, not independently tested findings.
