Night City is the corporate-ruled megalopolis where Cyberpunk 2077 takes place. You play V, a mercenary trying to survive and make a name in a city whose towering wealth, dangerous work, cybernetic technology and hard choices shape both the story and the way you play.
What is Night City?
Night City is the fictional future metropolis at the center of Cyberpunk 2077. CD PROJEKT RED originally placed the game in the universe of the Cyberpunk 2020 tabletop role-playing game, describing Night City as a corporate-ruled future metropolis. What is Night City like?
The official franchise site presents Night City as a sprawling megalopolis with sharply contrasting spaces. Its examples run from the polished high rises of Corpo Plaza to the open expanses of the Badlands on the city’s outskirts. That contrast offers a useful way to read the setting: concentrated corporate wealth and dense urban life exist alongside a much wider, less built-up edge. The scale also shows up in how the game frames ordinary movement through the world. Its original announcement highlighted megabuildings, while the present-day game description emphasizes jobs and the choices attached to them. Together, those details make the city feel like a place V must navigate for a living, not simply a collection of views between story scenes.
How does Night City shape the gameplay?
The city’s pressures connect directly to V’s tools and progress. The official game description says players can develop a playstyle through skills, perks, weapons, hacking and body-enhancing implants. Jobs and decisions can affect reputation, relationships and narrative outcomes, giving work in the city both mechanical and story consequences. Official game overview

Why has the city been called the game’s antagonist?
Lead writer Tomasz Marchewka described the team’s creative conclusion during pre-production this way: “Quite quickly, during pre-production of Cyberpunk 2077, we realized that Night City is going to be our main antagonist.” The remark appeared in a December 10, 2025, GamesRadar+ interview feature. “Antagonist” here is a creative lens, not an in-world person or a claim that the city literally acts with one intention. The phrase captures how the setting’s scale, work and pressures can make survival feel like a conflict with the environment itself, even as individual characters and organizations drive specific events.
Where is Dogtown?
Dogtown is a walled-off district within Night City introduced as a key location in Phantom Liberty, the spy-thriller expansion. How can you explore Night City beyond the main game?
The game is the most direct way to experience Night City through V’s work and choices. For a visual and lore-focused account, Penguin Random House describes The World of Cyberpunk 2077 as an art and lore book covering the city’s districts, gangs and history. There are also products that treat the setting as a game or collectible rather than as a detailed city guide. Asmodee describes Gangs of Night City as a competitive board game for one to four players about gangs vying for control of the underworld.
