What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes—but the shutdown applies to the mainland China Nintendo Switch service operated by Tencent, not Nintendo eShop worldwide. Sales ended on March 31, 2026, and downloads, code redemption, and other network services ended on May 15, 2026. Tencent’s separate official repair service for mainland China consoles is scheduled to end on December 31, 2026.
What shut down, and when?
Tencent’s November 26, 2024 notice set two service deadlines. Both have now passed.
| Deadline | What changed |
|---|---|
| March 31, 2026, 22:00 | The mainland China eShop stopped selling games, tools, and software. Free trials and free tools also became unavailable. |
| May 15, 2026, 22:00 | Downloads, code redemption, and other network-related services stopped. Tencent’s April 30, 2026 reminder confirmed that this service shutdown had taken place. |
These dates concern the Tencent-operated mainland China service. They do not establish that eShop access ended in other regions. Tencent’s original service-adjustment notice and its April 2026 reminder describe the scope and schedule.
Can you still redownload games bought on a China Switch?
No. Tencent said owners would no longer be able to download or update software after May 15, 2026, at 22:00. That includes purchased games and tools, as well as downloadable content. Games and DLC that were already downloaded to the console’s local storage are not the same as software that needs to be fetched again from the service.

Tencent also warned that a console failure requiring motherboard replacement after the cutoff could leave digital games or tools impossible to download again. Its user notice and pre-shutdown checklist advised owners to download purchased software and DLC locally before service ended, update the console and software, redeem outstanding codes, retain the user associated with the linked WeChat account, and set the intended primary console if using more than one. Those online download and redemption options are now closed.
Will downloaded games still work offline?
Local play may remain available for software already stored on a console, but it depends on the game and the feature. The network shutdown did not mean every function of every downloaded title stopped. For example, Tencent’s affected-software list says Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online play is unavailable, while Mario Tennis Aces loses online play and online tournaments. Other titles have feature-specific effects.

Does this affect Switch consoles outside mainland China?
The notices covered the mainland China Nintendo Switch service operated through Tencent. They are not a notice that Nintendo eShop has shut down globally, nor do they establish a shutdown for other regional services. The geographic scope matters: the sales and network-service dates above apply to the Tencent service in mainland China.

Can owners still claim or redeem the shutdown reward codes?
No. The reward program was for eligible activated mainland China consoles. The claim window through the “Game Collection” WeChat mini-program closed on March 31, 2026, at 22:00; codes then had to be redeemed and downloaded by May 15, 2026, at 22:00. Both deadlines have passed, so the codes are not currently claimable or redeemable through the closed service. The dates and conditions appear in Tencent’s original notice.
When does Tencent stop repairing China Switch consoles?
Official repair service is a separate matter from the completed eShop and network shutdown. Tencent’s August 25, 2025 notice sets December 31, 2026, as the end date for official repair service for mainland China Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED consoles and specified accessories.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a microSD card help after the shutdown?
A compatible microSD card can provide local storage for software downloaded to the console, which is useful for managing games and DLC already obtained. It cannot restore a missing download, reopen the eShop, enable online play, or provide updates. Check compatibility for the specific console before buying a card; storage does not replace access to the closed Tencent services.
