The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller’s headline upgrades are now confirmed, not just rumored: a front C Button opens the GameChat menu, rear GL and GR buttons can be assigned to button inputs, and an audio jack supports headphones and headsets. Reports about these features circulated in December 2024; Nintendo’s official documentation now describes them as features of the Switch 2 Pro Controller.
What new buttons does the Switch 2 Pro Controller have?
Nintendo’s support materials show three additions: the C Button on the front, plus GL and GR on the rear of the controller’s grip handles. The C Button opens the GameChat menu. GL and GR can each be assigned to button inputs of your choice, offering extra inputs without moving your thumbs from the sticks.
Nintendo EPD Director Takuhiro Dohta described the rear controls in the company’s developer interview: “We also added new buttons on the back of the grip handles labeled GL and GR.”
What does the C Button do?
Pressing the C Button opens the GameChat menu, according to Nintendo’s Switch 2 Pro Controller FAQ. Nintendo’s controller diagram places it on the front of the controller.

What are the GL and GR buttons for?
The rear GL and GR buttons can be assigned to button inputs selected by the player. Nintendo confirms that they are mappable, but the cited documentation does not specify a particular setup menu or remapping procedure. The buttons sit on the backs of the grip handles, where they can be reached without using the front face buttons.
Does the Switch 2 Pro Controller have a headphone jack?
Yes. Nintendo lists an audio jack for headphones and headsets. Its developer interview adds that a headset microphone can be used for voice chat, so the jack is not limited to listening audio. See Nintendo’s FAQ and Ask the Developer Vol. 16.

Nintendo says original Switch Joy-Con controllers and the original Pro Controller can also be used with Switch 2. That compatibility statement does not establish that legacy controllers gain the newer model’s buttons or audio jack, nor does it specify compatibility for every game. Nintendo’s developer interview and support FAQ address the points above.
What did the 2024 leak get right?
A December 2024 ComicBook.com report described alleged rear buttons and a 3.5 mm jack, while noting that the rear buttons’ purpose was then uncertain. Nintendo’s later documentation confirms the GL and GR controls, their assignability, and the audio jack; its official pages also establish the C Button’s GameChat function. The old report is historical context, not evidence of a fresh or unreleased controller revision, and its other speculation should not be treated as confirmed.

How long does the controller take to charge?
Nintendo Singapore lists a charging time of 3.5 hours and says the controller can be charged with a Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter or the included USB charging cable. That is charging time, not battery runtime; Nintendo’s cited specification does not establish how long a charge lasts in play. See the Nintendo Singapore specifications page.
