The arrangements were not the same: Smyths announced a collection window across its stores and limited extra stock for in-store purchase, while the reported Currys midnight opening was tied to one London store and its own pre-orders. The Standard’s June 5 launch-day report also described Currys customers at Oxford Street and said most customers at stores were collecting consoles ordered in advance.

How Smyths’ midnight collection worked
Smyths announced that stores would open from 12:01 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. on June 5 for Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order collection. The window covered Click & Collect and In-Store Collection orders, and customers were required to bring photo identification. Smyths also said limited stock would be available to buy in-store. It did not publish store-by-store allocations in the cited reporting, so that announcement does not establish that a particular branch had a console available for walk-in buyers. The events included a Mario Kart World demo. The first 100 attendees were offered Nintendo merchandise goodie bags, while supplies lasted. Attending the event did not mean customers could collect a console early: Smyths said consoles would not be handed over before 12:01 a.m. Its invitation, reproduced by Insider Gaming, said: “We will open selected stores at 11pm on Wednesday, 4th June for an exciting Nintendo Switch 2 Launch Event!”
What was Currys’ midnight arrangement?
The reported Currys midnight opening was at the Oxford Street store in London and was for customers who had pre-ordered Switch 2 through Currys. The available launch reporting does not establish that other Currys branches opened at midnight or that walk-in buyers could purchase a console there then. The Standard’s launch-day report covered the Oxford Street customer activity.

The UK release date was Thursday, June 5, 2025. Nintendo’s corporate schedule lists Nintendo Switch 2, Mario Kart World and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour for June 5, while noting that release dates can differ by region. The UK date is also reflected in Nintendo’s launch announcement and the UK launch-day reporting cited above.
The Standard reported that Currys called Switch 2 its “biggest gaming pre-order ever” and said 30,000 units had already been sold, attributing that figure to the BBC. This is a secondhand report of Currys’ figure, not an audited UK-wide sales total. The Standard’s article is the source for that attribution.
