Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 Switch 2 Direct set the console’s release date for June 5, 2025, with U.S. launch prices of $449.99 for the console and $499.99 for a bundle that included Mario Kart World. The reveal showed a larger screen, magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers with mouse operation in supported games, GameChat and a slate spanning launch-day releases, later games and upgraded Switch titles. Viewer comments reflected both excitement and reservations, particularly about price and the launch lineup.

What changed in the hardware and features?
A larger screen and redesigned controllers
The system has a 7.9-inch display. Nintendo’s April 2 release said it had “a large 7.9-inch display while maintaining the same thickness as Nintendo Switch.” Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically, and supported games can use them as mouse-style controls. The console also has a second USB-C port. Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 announcement

Storage and TV output
Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage. For expandable storage, Nintendo specifies microSD Express cards. When docked, the system can output up to 4K with a compatible TV and game, but Nintendo caps 4K output at 60 frames per second. Its up-to-120-fps figure applies at resolutions below 4K; it should not be read as a promise of 4K at 120 fps.
Backward compatibility and upgraded editions
Compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games are supported, though Nintendo cautions that some titles may not be supported or fully compatible. The Direct also showed Switch 2 Editions or upgrade paths for selected existing games, including Super Mario Party Jamboree, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Metroid Prime 4 and Pokémon Legends: Z-A. An upgrade path does not mean every enhancement is free; some require a separately purchased upgrade pack. Nintendo Life’s Direct announcement roundup
GameChat
Pressing the C button on the right Joy-Con 2 starts GameChat. Nintendo announced voice chat for up to 12 people, with up to four participants able to share screens and use video chat. Voice chat does not require a camera; video chat requires a compatible USB camera, including Nintendo’s separately sold camera. Nintendo’s April 2025 announcement said GameChat would be available through a free Open-Access period ending March 31, 2026, after which a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership would be required. Those were the original announced terms, not confirmation of current service access or pricing. Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 announcement

How did viewers react to the reveal?
Comments on Nintendo Life and a Reddit reactions thread showed a range of self-selected opinions, not a representative poll of Nintendo customers. Enthusiastic commenters highlighted Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, Hades II, third-party ports and the Joy-Con mouse function. Skeptical comments focused on the console and game prices, how many first-party launch games felt compelling, the absence of an announced new 3D Mario in the discussed lineup, and whether to wait before buying. Some people expressed interest without planning a day-one purchase. A Reddit commenter put that hesitation as “not a day one purchase for me”; another said, “Price killed Day 1 purchase for me.” Reddit’s April 2 reactions thread and Nintendo Life’s Direct coverage and comments
Those reactions are best understood across several separate questions: whether the hardware and social features appealed, whether console and game prices felt acceptable, how attractive the first-party launch offering seemed, whether third-party breadth compensated for any perceived gaps, and how backward compatibility or paid upgrades affected the value calculation. The comments document those arguments; they do not establish how common any view was. For context separate from audience sentiment, Nintendo later reported more than 3.5 million Switch 2 units sold worldwide in the first four days, calling it the highest global first-four-day sales level for Nintendo hardware. That company-reported launch figure was published June 11, 2025, and is not a measure of how viewers reacted to the Direct. Nintendo’s June 11, 2025 sales announcement
What the reveal amounted to
The April 2 Direct paired a clear hardware step—larger display, magnetic mouse-capable controllers, more storage and social features—with a mixed-timing game slate. Its headline price and lineup drew both enthusiasm and hesitation in online comments; those threads offer examples of reader reasoning, not a verdict from all prospective buyers. The announcement is most useful when read with its dates intact: launch prices were announced in 2025, some games were due later, and selected Switch upgrades could carry separate costs.
