Nintendo revealed Switch 2 on January 16, 2025, then announced its launch date, hardware details, games and services on April 2. The console launched on June 5, 2025, so this roundup separates those original announcements from later software updates. If you’re looking for a Nintendo Switch 2 console, treat the launch prices below as historical US suggested retail prices—not a current quote—and check local pricing and stock.
What did Nintendo announce about Switch 2?
Nintendo’s January 16, 2025 announcement introduced Nintendo Switch 2 as the successor to the original Switch and said it would be released in 2025. Nintendo also cautioned that some original Switch games might not be supported or fully compatible. Nintendo’s January announcement was an initial reveal, not the complete launch briefing.

What changed in the hardware?
Switch 2 retains the original system’s hybrid idea: play on the built-in screen or connect the console to a TV through its dock. The April announcement specified a 7.9-inch LCD screen with 1080p resolution, magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers, and 256 GB of internal storage—eight times the original Switch’s stated storage capacity. Nintendo’s Switch 2 features page gives the announced hardware and feature details.
Screen, dock and performance output
The built-in display is an LCD, not an OLED. When docked, the system can output up to 4K or up to 120 frames per second under compatible conditions. Those are different ceilings: at 4K resolution, output is capped at 60 fps. Actual resolution and frame rate depend on the game, display and other compatible equipment.

Joy-Con 2 and social play
Joy-Con 2 attach magnetically and can function as a mouse in compatible games. Nintendo also announced GameChat, which supports voice chat for up to 12 people, screen sharing for up to four, and video chat with a compatible USB-C camera. The initially open-access period ended in March 2026; Nintendo said a Nintendo Switch Online membership would be required afterward. Participation depends on the game and feature support; it does not mean every title can be shared.
Can Switch 2 play original Switch games?
It can play compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but compatibility is not universal. Nintendo warned at the initial reveal that some titles may be unsupported or may not work fully. Check the current Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility information for the specific game and any conditions before relying on it.

Switch 2 game storage expansion requires a microSD Express card. A conventional microSD card cannot be used to store or play Switch 2 games. Nintendo says ordinary microSD cards can only be used with Switch 2 to view screenshots and videos captured on the original Switch. Check the card’s label and Nintendo’s storage guidance before buying; the fact that a card fits physically does not make it suitable for game storage.
What games and plans came after launch?
Nintendo’s February 2026 investor presentation adds a dated update beyond the original announcement. It lists Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition as released on January 15, 2026, and names additional titles and plans for 2026, including Mario Tennis Fever, Pokémon Pokopia, and Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. A presentation’s planned timing is not a guarantee of a final release date; consult Nintendo’s current game listings for status. The presentation also reports more than 6.1 billion video games sold and over 870 million hardware units globally, cumulative Nintendo-wide totals—not Switch 2 sales figures. Nintendo’s February 2026 investor presentation provides that context.
