The headline does not specify a year or region; March 18, 2026 has already passed. Nintendo’s US listing presents Pokopia as a Nintendo Switch 2 game and distinguishes the paid game from a free update, a purchaser bonus, and paid DLC.
Is Pokémon Pokopia a free Nintendo Switch Online download?
Nintendo’s official US product listing does not offer the full game as a free Nintendo Switch Online download. It lists Pokémon Pokopia as a Nintendo Switch 2 game released on March 5, 2026, with digital and physical game-key card versions. The physical card requires a full game download, an internet connection for that download, and the card inserted to download and play. Nintendo’s product listing does not corroborate a March 18 deadline for claiming the full game.
This finding is limited to the official Nintendo sources available here; it does not establish that no regional or separately announced promotion has ever existed. The title’s claim gives no year or region, and Nintendo notes that online features and services may not be available in all countries.
What free Pokopia content does Nintendo list?
Nintendo describes two different free items or benefits that should not be mistaken for a free copy of the game:
Recommended Free Tools
#1 Best Overall
- Shape the world and build a cozy new life with Pokémon as a Ditto transformed to look like a human.
- Use other Pokémon’s moves, like Bulbasaur’s Leafage, to revitalize and navigate the world around you.
- Meet and befriend more Pokémon as you help nature flourish.
- Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
- Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.
- Ditto rug: An in-game early-purchase bonus, not the full game. Eligible owners can claim it through Mystery Gift by selecting “Get via Internet,” no later than Sunday, January 31, 2027. It is available with either the game-key card or digital version.
- Underwater exploration update: A free software update for everyone who owns Pokopia. To explore underwater, Ditto needs Dive, the ability to jump, and Surf; players must also complete the “Raise the environment level!” request in Bleak Beach.
How to claim the Ditto rug
- Own Pokémon Pokopia for Nintendo Switch 2, in either digital or game-key card form.
- Play until the Mystery Gift feature unlocks, which Nintendo says takes about 30 minutes.
- Connect to the internet and link a Nintendo Account, then open Mystery Gift and choose “Get via Internet.”
- Claim the rug by January 31, 2027.
Nintendo explicitly says an NSO membership is not required to claim the rug. This applies to the bonus claim, not to every online feature in the game.
When does Nintendo Switch Online matter?
Nintendo Support says an NSO membership is required to use Pokopia’s online features. That requirement is separate from buying or owning the game and from claiming the Ditto rug. The support page lists version 2.0.1 as released September 7, 2026, and records a rating-setting change for Brazil on October 1, 2026. Nintendo says an update must be installed to use internet features and that players need the same software version to play together. See Nintendo Support’s Pokopia update history for version details.

How the game, bonus, update, and DLC differ
| Item | What it is | What is required |
|---|---|---|
| Pokémon Pokopia | The full Nintendo Switch 2 game; Nintendo’s US listing does not present it as a free NSO download. | Purchase and a compatible Nintendo Switch 2 system. |
| Ditto rug | In-game early-purchase bonus. | Own the game; use Mystery Gift with internet access and a linked Nintendo Account by January 31, 2027. NSO is not required. |
| Underwater exploration update | Free software update for owners. | Own the game; install the update. Underwater exploration also has in-game ability and request requirements. |
| Expansion Pass | Paid DLC offered as a three-part package. | Purchase the add-on. Nintendo lists Part 1 as Bubbly Basin, Part 2 as planned for late 2026, and Part 3 as planned for 2027; schedules may change. |
| Online features | Online play or other internet features, distinct from the rug claim. | Nintendo Support says NSO is required for the game’s online features; an update is required for internet features. |
Why the distinction matters
A free update changes software for people who already own the game; it does not make the game free. The rug is an item claimed inside the game, and the Expansion Pass is paid DLC. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company reported more than 2.2 million global sales, including one million in Japan, during the first four days after the March 5, 2026 worldwide launch; the figure includes physical and digital sales. The companies’ March 12 release reports those sales, not a free NSO offer.
