Yes—Nintendo’s official statements support continued use of the original Nintendo Switch after Switch 2 launched. Nintendo anticipated that many players would use both systems and says it will keep working to support as many Switch games as possible. Switch Online features also remain available on both consoles. But Nintendo has not promised an indefinite support period, future Switch releases, or universal compatibility.

What Nintendo has said about continued Switch support

In an April 2, 2025 developer interview, Nintendo’s Technology Development team said it originally developed Switch 2 expecting that many players would continue playing both Switch and Switch 2 after the newer system launched. The team also said it would continue efforts to support as many Switch games as possible. Read Nintendo’s developer interview.

Those statements point to continued use and ongoing compatibility work, not a deadline-free promise. Nintendo has not specified how long it will provide Switch hardware repairs, security updates, new Switch releases, or eShop access. The statements also do not guarantee that every Switch game will work on Switch 2.

Can you keep using your original Switch?

Yes. Nintendo’s stated expectation that players may use both consoles supports keeping an original Switch in service rather than treating Switch 2 as an automatic replacement. It can remain useful for the Switch games and features you already rely on, while Switch 2 offers its own games and upgrades.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Before deciding whether to keep, replace, or use both systems, consider:

  • Which games you own and whether each one is compatible with Switch 2.
  • Whether you need an original Switch feature or accessory that does not carry over.
  • How you use your Nintendo Account, eShop, and Switch Online membership.
  • Whether Switch 2-only games or upgrades matter to you.

Will your Switch games work on Switch 2?

Nintendo says Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Compatibility can vary by game and may change as Nintendo tests titles or issues updates. Check Nintendo’s game compatibility listing for the current status of a specific title; Nintendo advises contacting the third-party publisher when you need title-specific information. Can you use Nintendo Switch Online on the original Switch?

Yes. Nintendo says members can use Switch Online features and benefits on a linked Switch or Switch 2 console and continue using their existing membership. Specific online features can still depend on the membership, game, age, or device requirements. Check Nintendo’s compatibility page and Nintendo Switch Online FAQ for the applicable conditions.

Do original Switch accessories work with Switch 2?

Not all of them. Nintendo’s compatibility table distinguishes accessories that work from those that are incompatible or have limitations. For example, original Joy-Con controllers can pair wirelessly with Switch 2 but cannot attach to its body; the original Switch dock is not compatible. Check the official accessory compatibility table before assuming a particular controller or accessory will carry over.
