For Thursday, July 24, 2025, NYT Connections is game #774. Start with the four category clues below if you want a nudge; the full word groups are farther down, after a spoiler warning.

Gentle hints for Connections #774

  • Yellow: Super massive.
  • Green: Gotta go.
  • Blue: Slam dunk.
  • Purple: Sounds like a robbery.

The 16 words

STEEL, POLE, GIANT, SPLIT, JET, LUTE, RIM, KNICK, NET, TITANIC, GREAT, BOUNCE, DIP, BACKBOARD, RABE, MAMMOTH

Spoiler warning: full answers

The solutions for July 24 are:

  • COLOSSAL: GIANT, GREAT, MAMMOTH, TITANIC
  • LEAVE QUICKLY: BOUNCE, DIP, JET, SPLIT
  • PARTS OF A BASKETBALL HOOP: BACKBOARD, NET, POLE, RIM
  • HOMOPHONES OF SYNONYMS FOR “NAB”: KNICK, LUTE, RABE, STEEL

Why the puzzle can mislead

GIANT, JET, KNICK and NET look like they might form a New York sports-team set, but they belong to four different intended groups. The purple category is built around sound-alikes: KNICK sounds like “nick,” LUTE like “loot,” RABE like “rob,” and STEEL like “steal.” RABE is the less familiar word in that set and can make the connection harder to spot.

How Connections works

Connections asks players to sort 16 words into four groups of four. Try Hard Guides describes the game as allowing up to four mistakes. TechRadar says it can be played on the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
