Nioh 3 Review: A Deeper, More Open-Ended Samurai Action RPG

Nioh 3’s style-switching combat and broader regions make it a compelling, demanding action RPG, though map density and PC performance vary by player and system.

Verdict: Nioh 3 is a strong choice for players who want demanding action combat, meaningful build variety, and more room to explore between fights. Its Samurai and Ninja styles give encounters two distinct rhythms, while the move to large open-field regions makes this the series’ biggest structural change. That change also brings a busier map, and PC reviewers reported performance that varied by system.

What Nioh 3 is—and what changed

KOEI TECMO describes Nioh 3 as a dark samurai action RPG developed by Team NINJA. Its story follows Tokugawa Takechiyo, heir to the shogunate, as his younger brother Kunimatsu conspires against him alongside yokai. The journey spans different periods and places, including Edo Castle, Totomi during the Warring States period, Heian-era Kyoto, and the Bakumatsu period. KOEI TECMO’s game page summarizes the aim as “Overcome difficult challenges in an open field.”

The open-field format is a shift from the more mission-led structure of earlier Nioh games, but it is not one seamless, continuous world. PC Gamer describes four independent maps, while TechRadar calls the structure semi-open-world. Think distinct regions to explore, not a single uninterrupted landscape. PC Gamer’s review and TechRadar’s review both discuss the change.

How the combat works

The central combat idea is that you can switch between Samurai and Ninja styles. Samurai builds on the series’ deliberate, grounded fighting, with Arts Proficiency and Deflect adding further combat options. Ninja favors mobility, aerial attacks, Ninjutsu, Mist, and Evade. The styles are not just cosmetic variants: they offer different ways to approach positioning, offense, and defense.

#1 Best Overall

Samurai

Choose Samurai for a more measured approach that emphasizes grounded exchanges. Its Arts Proficiency and Deflect mechanics expand the options within that style.

Ninja

Choose Ninja when you want to move quickly, attack from the air, and make use of Ninjutsu, Mist, and Evade. The ability to change styles gives you another tool for adapting to a fight.

TechRadar praised the combat depth and build variety, as well as the freedom to shift styles. That depth is also a commitment: players looking for a simple, low-friction action game may find the systems demanding rather than immediately comfortable.

Exploration, map density, and difficulty

The regions offer a broader space to explore than the earlier mission-based structure, but reviewers also noted a trade-off: the map can feel crowded with collectibles. PC Gamer praised the open-field redesign and enemy variety while saying the map could feel overloaded with things to find. If you enjoy clearing optional points of interest, that density may be a draw; if you prefer a focused route through the main story, it may feel like distraction.

Nioh 3 remains a challenging action RPG. TechRadar specifically found later chapters and Crucible sections difficult. Expect to engage with its combat systems and builds rather than rely on a forgiving difficulty curve.

Is Nioh 3 worth it?

It is easiest to recommend to players who enjoy difficult action RPGs and want combat complexity, flexible builds, and exploration that breaks up the fighting. It is a less obvious fit if you want a straightforward action game, a sparsely populated map, or an easy ride through the later chapters.

PC Gamer’s reviewer reported spending around 100 hours to reach 100% completion, including optional secrets. That is one reviewer’s completion experience, not a typical playtime estimate or a promise of how long the game will take you.

PS5 vs. PC: what reviewers found

Nioh 3 released on February 6, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Windows PC via Steam, according to KOEI TECMO America’s launch announcement. The review evidence for PC performance is mixed and system-specific, not a guarantee of how the current game will run on every PC.

  • PC: PC Gamer reviewed on a system with a Ryzen 7 7700X, RTX 4080, and 64GB RAM. That reviewer described performance as very strong, but said other members of the team had choppier results. TechRadar’s PC reviewer reported inconsistent performance in dense environments on their own system. These observations show hardware variance; they do not establish a universal performance result or describe every current build.
  • PS5: The game is listed for PS5 by the publisher, but the cited PC performance reports do not establish a direct PS5-versus-PC performance comparison.

Choose between platforms based on where you want to play and the hardware available to you. The available review evidence does not support a blanket claim that one platform performs better.

Does Nioh 3 have co-op or crossplay?

Yes, Nioh 3 has online multiplayer. KOEI TECMO lists Summon Visitor and Expeditions as multiplayer features. Its launch announcement described a free demo for PS5 and Windows PC via Steam with solo and online play for up to three players, character creation, a Jakotsu-baba boss, and save transfer to the full game. The demo’s completion reward had a February 15, 2026 deadline and is not presented as currently obtainable. The publisher explicitly says cross-play is not supported. See the launch announcement for the publisher’s details.

Launch editions and availability

At launch, KOEI TECMO announced Standard and Digital Deluxe editions, a physical SteelBook Launch Edition, and a special PS5 physical TREASURE BOX sold through the NIS America Store. The Digital Deluxe Edition included in-game items and the season pass. The TREASURE BOX was described as including the base game, a Scampuss Furball Netsuke Charm Keychain, an original desk pad, an official artbook, and a selection soundtrack CD. These are launch-announcement details; current stock and prices are not established here. The publisher’s announcement lists the launch options.
