Nintendo brought Famicom Detective Club back with Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, a new mystery for Nintendo Switch that launched on August 29, 2024. Nintendo called it the series’ first new story in 35 years. It follows the Switch remakes of The Missing Heir and The Girl Who Stands Behind.

What is Emio – The Smiling Man?

Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club is a narrative mystery game in which the player works as an assistant investigator at the Utsugi Detective Agency. The case begins when a student is found dead with a paper bag marked by a smiling face. The image recalls clues from a series of unsolved murders 18 years earlier and the urban legend of Emio, known as “the Smiling Man.” Nintendo’s July 17, 2024 announcement introduced the premise.

How does it relate to the earlier Famicom Detective Club games?

Nintendo presented Emio as the first new Famicom Detective Club story in 35 years. The series’ earlier games are The Missing Heir and The Girl Who Stands Behind, both remade for Nintendo Switch before this new entry. That makes Emio a new case in the series rather than another remake.

What do you do in the investigation?

As an assistant investigator with the Utsugi Detective Agency, the player helps police connect evidence and testimony. The investigation involves questioning people, gathering accounts, examining clues, and visiting locations. These activities move the case forward as the player tries to determine how the student’s death connects to the older murders and the Emio legend.

When did Emio release, and where can you play it?

Emio – The Smiling Man launched for Nintendo Switch on August 29, 2024. Nintendo’s investor release schedule confirms that date while noting that release dates can vary by region. Nintendo’s April–December 2024 schedule lists the game on August 29.

Nintendo’s UK game page lists both a download version and a physical Game Card. It also describes a free demo covering up to Chapter 3, with progress transferable to the full game; check the local Nintendo storefront for current demo availability. The UK page lists Japanese voiceover and English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish on-screen text. Its technical language listing also includes Korean and Chinese, which are not identified there as voice languages. Nintendo UK’s game page provides those regional details.
