Ninja Gaiden 4 is not locked to one difficulty for a full playthrough. Its first-story options are Hero, Normal, and Hard, and you can change difficulty as you progress. Hero also offers toggleable combat assists, while Master Ninja—the toughest challenge—is unlocked after clearing Story Mode. Separate settings cover controls, visibility, healing, and platforming.

Is Ninja Gaiden 4 too hard for beginners?

Not necessarily. Hero is the assisted starting option for players who are new to the series, fast action games, or its demanding combat. Rather than relying only on a lower challenge, Hero provides optional assists that can take care of defensive actions while you learn to read encounters and build your own combat habits.

Xbox Wire describes Auto Evade, Auto Block, and Auto Assist; Team NINJA director Masakazu Hirayama also discusses Auto Guard and Auto Dodge in the Official Xbox Podcast. The naming differs between those descriptions, so treat them as examples of the assistance available rather than assume every label appears together in one menu. The key point is that assists can be toggled as you gain confidence, rather than being an all-or-nothing easy setting. Xbox Wire’s difficulty and accessibility guide and the Official Xbox Podcast transcript describe the options.

What difficulty options are available?

Option When available What to expect
Hero First Story Mode playthrough Assisted combat, with toggles that can help with defensive actions and let you take over more manually as you learn.
Normal First Story Mode playthrough The standard starting challenge, without Hero’s extra combat-assist framing.
Hard First Story Mode playthrough A tougher initial challenge for players seeking more demanding combat.
Master Ninja Unlocked after clearing Story Mode The highest challenge, with more numerous and stronger enemies appearing earlier, according to Xbox Wire.

The first three names are the official Xbox material’s labels for the initial story choices. A pre-release AUTOMATON WEST interview refers to “Easy” in one passage while discussing Hero; for clarity, Hero is the assisted entry option, not a separate fourth first-playthrough choice. The interview also describes Master Ninja as a post-clear New Game Plus challenge that cannot be customized. AUTOMATON WEST’s interview with the directors offers that additional context.

  • An endless rain of miasma hangs over a near-future Tokyo in the wake of an ancient enemy’s resurrection. The fate of the city lies in the hands of young ninja prodigy, Yakumo.

Can you change difficulty during the story?

Yes. Xbox Wire says difficulty can be switched during Story Mode, and Hirayama says players can move among Hero, Normal, and Hard as they progress. The developer interview describes choosing a change between chapters, so do not assume the setting can be changed at every moment or in the middle of combat. The practical takeaway is that your initial pick need not dictate the entire first playthrough.

That flexibility is intended to let players shape the challenge as their skills or comfort change. Hirayama said the team wanted players to “level up in their own way” and tailor combat and difficulty to their progression. The podcast transcript contains his explanation.

Ninja Gaiden Ragebound (PS5) - 2D Action, Hand Drawn Graphics, Epic Story
  • INTENSIVE 2D ACTION: Engage in fast melee and acrobatic movements that require precision and concentration to master every challenge your way through the game.
  • CONFIDENCY VISUAL STYLE: Explore hand-drawn environments with dark and atmospheric tones that deliver a unique visual identity and enhance the epic feel throughout the game.
  • NEW HERO AND STORY: Take the role of Kenji Mozu, disciple of Ryu Hayabusa, and unexpectedly work with enemies to fight the demons invasion and restore balance between the worlds.
  • INNOVATIVE GAMING SYSTEMS: Discover new abilities and battle techniques through the band between Kenji and the mysterious Kumori, which opens up to variety and strategy in the gaming experience.
  • CHOOSING FIENDS AND BOODS : Every enemy and boss requires carefully timing and strategy, where slightest mistakes can become decisive, keeping the adrenaline at peak in any confrontation.

Which difficulty should you choose?

  • Choose Hero if you are unsure about fast defensive timing or want the option to lean on assists while learning. You can reduce assistance as you become comfortable.
  • Choose Normal if you want to engage with the combat directly but do not want to begin at the more demanding Hard setting.
  • Choose Hard if you already enjoy challenging action combat and want a tougher first-story experience.
  • Try Master Ninja later if you want the post-clear challenge; it is not the first-playthrough choice.

There is no universally correct starting point. The useful distinction is whether you want help managing combat inputs, a standard challenge, or a harder opening run—not whether one choice is the “real” way to play. Nakao told AUTOMATON WEST that Hero was not designed simply as a mode where players effortlessly sweep through the game, but to preserve the series’ signature combat experience.

What accessibility and control options are separate from difficulty?

Difficulty and combat assists are only part of the settings. Xbox Wire lists options aimed at different input, visibility, and presentation needs, including:
