Physical games
Insert a compatible original Switch game card into Switch 2 to play it. Owning the card does not guarantee that every game is supported, so verify its status first.
Digital games
Digital Switch games associated with your Nintendo Account can be downloaded to Switch 2, subject to compatibility. Make sure you can access the account that owns the games; Nintendo also provides guidance on transferring games from older consoles.

Which original Switch accessories work?
Game compatibility does not mean every original Switch accessory can be reused. Nintendo’s current guidance distinguishes among controllers, the dock, power, and storage:

Is Mario Kart World available on the original Switch?

What is new in Mario Kart World?
Nintendo describes Mario Kart World as a series-first interconnected environment, with roads linking courses and regions such as cities, plains, desert, and ocean. Its announced features include dynamic weather, a day-and-night cycle, and races with up to 24 drivers. Those are Nintendo’s product descriptions, not independent performance findings.
Modes announced by Nintendo
- Grand Prix: Race across courses in a Grand Prix.
- Knockout Tour: A mode named by Nintendo among the game’s offerings.
- Battle Mode: A battle-focused mode.
- Free Roam: Explore the interconnected world outside the listed race and battle modes.
Nintendo detailed the game in its April 17, 2025 Mario Kart World Direct coverage and described it as available only on Switch 2 in its June 5, 2025 launch announcement.
What did Switch 2 cost at its U.S. launch?
Nintendo’s U.S. launch announcement listed suggested retail prices of $449.99 for the Switch 2 console and $499.99 for a Switch 2 bundle with a digital copy of Mario Kart World. Nintendo described that bundle as limited production through fall 2025, while supplies lasted. These are historical U.S. launch terms, not current prices or availability; check retailers and Nintendo for current offers. Nintendo also said its launch lineup included over 20 available titles.

Should you keep your original Switch when moving to Switch 2?
Make the decision around your library and setup rather than assuming the new system replaces everything you own.
- Look up each game you care about in Nintendo’s compatibility information.
- For digital games, confirm access to the Nintendo Account that owns them; for physical games, identify the cards you want to keep using.
- Check controller, dock, adapter, and storage compatibility separately. The original dock and standard microSD cards are notable exceptions.
- Consider whether you want Mario Kart World, which is exclusive to Switch 2.
