No—under Blizzard’s Season 10 announcement, players would not need to unlock a new hero through the Battle Pass. Blizzard said new heroes would be available immediately when they launched, and existing heroes would also be unlocked for players. New accounts still had onboarding and original-roster unlocks to complete first.
What Blizzard announced for Season 10
In its Developer Update: Hero Releases, Mythics, and Gameplay Updates, Blizzard said: “Starting Season 10, all new heroes will be immediately unlocked when they launch.” It also said existing heroes would be unlocked for players and that heroes would no longer need a Battle Pass unlock to be playable in all game modes.
Venture was the announcement’s example. Blizzard identified Venture as the game’s 40th hero and said all players would have immediate access when Venture joined the roster in Season 10.
What changed from the earlier unlock route
Before this change, Blizzard’s Overwatch 2 explainer said new heroes would debut at Tier 55 on the free Battle Pass track. The Season 10 announcement replaced that wait with access at launch, rather than making players earn the hero through Battle Pass progression.

What new players still had to do
“All players” did not mean every hero appeared at first login on a new account. Blizzard said new players would still need to complete the first-time user experience and unlock heroes from the original Overwatch roster as they learned the game. Overwatch 2 heroes would become available after those original-roster unlocks.
A separate Battle Pass change: more free coins
Blizzard also announced that the amount of Overwatch Coins players could earn for free would rise from 540 to 600 per season. This was a separate currency change; it was not the mechanism for granting access to heroes.

How to read this announcement today
This describes Blizzard’s stated Season 10 policy, not a confirmation of the rules in effect in 2026. The announcement is about when heroes would be unlocked under that update; it should not be treated as verification that no later changes affected hero access.
