Overwatch 2 brought loot boxes back when Season 15 launched on February 18, 2025. During that season, players could earn standard boxes through weekly games and Battle Pass rewards; a limited-time event offered additional boxes. Here’s how Season 15’s rewards, contents and published odds worked—and what later use of loot boxes means for the timeline.
When did loot boxes return to Overwatch 2?
Blizzard’s Season 15 launch announcement identified the season as the return of loot boxes. That was a change from Blizzard’s 2022 explanation that loot boxes were going away as Overwatch 2 adopted a seasonal model and an in-game shop using Overwatch Coins. Blizzard’s Season 15 Spotlight gives the launch date; the earlier transition is described in Overwatch 2 explained.
How did you get loot boxes in Overwatch 2 Season 15?
Season 15 offered several routes. Weekly game rewards and the Perked Up event were separate: the event’s extra boxes were limited-time rewards, not part of the recurring weekly standard-box allowance.

These are the rewards and limits Blizzard announced for Season 15, not a claim about the current season’s challenges. Blizzard’s February 18, 2025 patch notes detail the game and event rewards. Its Season 15 overview states that loot boxes were not available from either Battle Pass track in Belgium; that notice should not be generalized to every region or to current rules.

What did a Season 15 Loot Box contain?
A standard box contained four randomly selected cosmetic items. Blizzard said boxes would prioritize items the player did not already own. If duplicates could not be avoided, opening the box granted progress toward a bonus box. Blizzard’s patch notes put it this way: “Loot Boxes will prioritize giving you items you don’t already own.”
Any unopened boxes carried over from earlier seasons automatically opened at the start of the next season, according to the Season 15 patch notes. The published description explains box contents and handling; it does not establish what any individual player would receive.

What were the Loot Box odds and guarantees?
Blizzard published these standard-box rarity chances per opening. They are chances for each rarity category, not portions of a single 100% total: a box has four items, and the rarity figures overlap.

The figures and guarantees are Blizzard’s published Season 15 mechanics, not probabilities for a particular skin. A Legendary Loot Box has a stronger box-level guarantee: it guarantees at least one Legendary item. The 5.1% figure is the chance for Legendary rarity in a standard-box opening, not the chance of receiving a specific Legendary cosmetic. Did loot boxes appear again after Season 15?
Yes. Season 15 was their return point, not the only later appearance. In a May 15, 2026 update, Blizzard described loot boxes as part of Anniversary event rewards and announced a special 10 Year Anniversary Loot Box with four guaranteed Legendary skins. That announcement is evidence of event-specific use; it does not establish a regular or current-season loot-box schedule. Blizzard’s Reign of Talon S2 mid-cycle update provides that later context.
