Overwatch 2 has brought 6v6 back for limited experiments, but Blizzard has not announced that it will replace 5v5 as the game’s permanent core format. The tests have explored different team-composition rules, and Blizzard’s September 2026 patch notes still included 6v6-specific balance work. That shows the format remains part of the game’s ongoing discussion—not that a permanent return is settled.
Is Overwatch 2 bringing back 6v6 permanently?
Not on the evidence available. Blizzard reopened the question through limited-time experiments, rather than promising to make 6v6 the game’s sole or permanent format. In July 2024, Game Director Aaron Keller cautioned that “the result or success of these experiments doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re going to be changing the main format of the game.” Read Blizzard’s July 2024 Director’s Take.

Blizzard’s September 17, 2026 patch notes include balance values specified separately for 5v5 and 6v6, along with other 6v6-labeled entries. This confirms that Blizzard was still tuning the format as of that patch; it does not establish whether 6v6 will remain available, become a permanent core mode, or replace 5v5. The latest patch notes are a dated snapshot, not a promise about future availability.
Why did Overwatch move from 6v6 to 5v5?
Blizzard described the move to 5v5 as a response to several design and matchmaking concerns. Keller cited greater individual agency as one goal, and said fights could become difficult to resolve when two tanks combined mitigation with strong healing. Blizzard also discussed queue-time challenges. These were Blizzard’s stated reasons for revisiting team size, not a claim that every player preferred 5v5. What 6v6 formats did Blizzard test?
The tests were not all the same ruleset. Blizzard varied composition limits, role switching, balance changes, and other systems, so “6v6” describes the team size rather than one fixed mode.
Min 1, Max 3
Blizzard’s Season 14 plan included a flexible format requiring at least one hero from each role—Tank, Damage, and Support—and allowing no more than three heroes from any one role. The January 21–February 3, 2025 Unranked event used first-come, first-served hero selection, with role switching allowed while players were in spawn. It was intended as a middle ground between strict Role Queue and Open Queue. Blizzard’s Season 14 6v6 discussion · January 2025 Overwatch 2 Retail Patch Notes.

Traditional 2-2-2
The other planned Season 14 experiment used the familiar arrangement of two tanks, two damage heroes, and two supports. Blizzard said the tests would have their own Unranked card and test-specific balance adjustments, including reductions to tank power and survivability. The team also said it was reviewing whether Overwatch 2’s passives would need changes for these formats. Blizzard’s Season 14 6v6 discussion.
Open Queue with a two-tank cap
A separate event announced in March 2025 used 6v6 Open Queue with a maximum of two tanks and Perks. Scheduled for March 18–April 21, it temporarily replaced 5v5 Open Queue. Its rules differed from both 2-2-2 and Min 1, Max 3, another reason not to treat every 6v6 test as the same experiment. Blizzard’s Season 15 Midseason announcement.

What do the 6v6 participation figures show?
In its 2025 retrospective, Blizzard said the 6v6 Role Queue version accounted for nearly 10% of all play hours for most of its event run. Role Queued Quick Play accounted for roughly 35–40% of play hours, and Blizzard noted that its share was lower during the 6v6 tests. Blizzard’s 2025 retrospective.
Those figures show that players spent a meaningful portion of their time in the experimental mode, but they are not a poll, a count of unique players, or proof that most players want Blizzard to change the core format. Blizzard itself said the size of demand remained uncertain.

What would a permanent return need to settle?
The experiments let Blizzard test different trade-offs instead of assuming that one version of 6v6 would work for every player. The key questions are how team composition and role flexibility affect queueing and match flow; whether two tanks can be balanced without making fights harder to resolve; and how tank survivability, Perks, and Overwatch 2 passives interact with each ruleset. Blizzard has not declared a winning format in the sources cited here.
For now, the clearest reading is that 6v6 is still being explored and tuned, while 5v5 has not been declared obsolete. A limited event, player participation, or a 6v6-specific balance entry is evidence of continued support for experimentation—not by itself a decision to make 6v6 the permanent default.
