Blizzard acknowledged the feedback in February 2026, then revealed a revised design on April 7, announced for Season 2 on April 14.
Why did fans want Anran redesigned?
Anran is a playable Overwatch damage hero with fire-themed abilities. Blizzard’s hero profile identifies her as a graduate of Wuxing University’s Fire College and lists Watchpoint Gibraltar as her current base of operations. Blizzard’s Anran hero profile
The criticism centered on a perceived gap between Anran’s face in the released game and her presentation in a promotional comic and cinematic. Fans also said the in-game model resembled other East Asian women characters, particularly Kiriko and Juno. Some called that perceived resemblance “same face syndrome”; it was a description used in the discussion, not a measured consensus among players. Game Developer, February 11, 2026
Fareeha Andersen, Anran’s voice performer, publicly expressed disappointment with the difference between the promotional portrayal and the released model. She also encouraged fans to communicate their concerns to Blizzard, adding a prominent voice to the criticism. Game Developer, February 11, 2026

How did Blizzard respond?
On February 10, game director Aaron Keller said the team was discussing how to make Anran look and feel more like the fierce older sister it had envisioned. He acknowledged that she could be better in-game and said Blizzard hoped to update her during Season 1, while noting that complex hero models require testing. That was the initial plan; Blizzard later announced a Season 2 release instead. Game Developer, February 11, 2026
What changed in Anran’s updated appearance?
Blizzard revealed the revised design on April 7 and announced it would arrive with Season 2 on April 14. Keller said the team changed Anran’s eyes, eyebrows, and mouth, moving away from what he described as a “baby face” toward a more sincere and mature expression. He also said adjustments to her posture helped her read more clearly as herself. GameSpot, April 7, 2026

These are reported observations of the design; Keller’s explanation of the intended effect was to make Anran feel more mature and sincere. The sequence was criticism of the launch model, a February acknowledgment and proposed update, then an April reveal of the revised appearance. The redesign addressed the specific concerns raised about Anran’s facial features, maturity, and distinction from her promotional portrayal. The available reporting does not establish how representative the criticism was across the Overwatch player base, so it should not be treated as a measured community consensus.
