If services are available, confirm cross-play and Battle.net friend visibility, then check group access, open slots, and which invite route you’re using. These steps help distinguish a service problem from an account, permission, or console-invite issue; they do not guarantee a fix for every game-side bug.
1. Check whether the problem is a service issue
If several friends cannot invite or join one another, check PlayStation Network status and current Overwatch service notices before changing settings. A forum thread dated February 26, 2026 contains reports from PS4 and PS5 players who could not invite or join groups, including a player who could enter a game but not join the group. Those reports document symptoms on that date; they do not establish that the issue is active now or confirm a permanent fix. Read the forum thread.
If only one friend pair is affected while other players can group normally, continue with the account, group, and invite-route checks below.
2. Confirm cross-play and Battle.net friend visibility
Blizzard lists both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 among the supported Overwatch cross-play systems. Its cross-play announcement says console accounts should be linked to Battle.net, and that players who opt out of cross-play will not see Battle.net friends in their friends list. Blizzard’s cross-play announcement dates to 2021, so use the current game screens for exact menu labels.

- Make sure cross-play has not been disabled by either player.
- Confirm the console account is linked to the intended Battle.net account.
- Check whether you can see one another in the in-game social list. If not, resolve friend visibility before troubleshooting group permissions.
3. Check group availability and access settings on PS5
PlayStation’s PS5 guidance says a player can join through a friend’s profile or game-group card, the friends list, or an invitation notification. The game must be installed and the group must have an open slot. Group settings can restrict who may join or invite, and a blocked player will not receive an invitation. - Verify that Overwatch 2 is installed on the console that is receiving the invite.
- Check that the group has room for another player.
- Review the group’s join and invite permissions.
- Confirm neither player has blocked the other.
4. Try the in-game invite route as well as the console route
PlayStation’s native profile and Game Base invite methods apply to PS5 games. In-game invitations can work with PS4 and PS5 games where supported. If a console notification appears to accept but does not put you in the Overwatch group, try inviting or joining through Overwatch’s own social screen as well. Conversely, if the in-game invite does nothing, try the console notification or a supported PS5 game-group route.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
When comparing results, change one factor at a time: PS4 game version versus PS5 game version, same-generation versus cross-generation players, console-level versus in-game invite, and whether both players appear in each other’s Overwatch/Battle.net social lists. This can help locate where the process fails; it does not show that any particular console-version pairing is defective.
5. Troubleshoot PSN connectivity only when symptoms point to PSN
If PlayStation itself reports a network connection error, check PSN status and follow PlayStation’s connection guidance. For PS5 error E2-8223b400, PlayStation recommends turning off the router and modem, waiting at least five minutes, then restarting them. PlayStation’s E2-8223b400 support page is general PSN troubleshooting, not confirmation that a router restart fixes an Overwatch-only group-invite problem.

6. Optional: try the historical in-match workaround
A player on the Overwatch Forums described a workaround in November 2022: the PS4 player joined a Quick Play match, then the PS5 player used the social screen’s “Join Group” option to enter that player’s group. The post says it worked for that group at the time, but it is an anecdote, not an official Blizzard fix, and it is not verified for current versions. Try it only if those menus and options are still available. Read the original forum post.

Include these details in a support report:
- Whether each player is on PS4 or PS5, and whether the PS5 is running the PS4 or PS5 version of the game.
- Whether the problem occurs with same-generation or PS4-to-PS5 invites.
- Whether you used an Overwatch in-game invite, a console invite, or both.
- Whether both players can see one another in the Overwatch/Battle.net social list.
- The exact error message, or what happens after accepting the invite.
