PCSX2 does not include a BIOS, and it cannot run games without one. This guide covers Windows, macOS, and Linux; menus and installation steps differ by operating system.
Will your PC run PCSX2?
PCSX2 lists minimum, moderate, and heavy hardware tiers, but these are guidance rather than guarantees. Performance varies by game, and a setup that handles one title well may struggle with another. GPU load also depends on graphics settings such as upscaling and blending accuracy. Check the official PCSX2 requirements for current guidance, and use current graphics drivers.
| Project tier | Example hardware listed by PCSX2 |
|---|---|
| Minimum | CPU: Intel Core i7-2760QM or AMD FX-8350. GPU: Nvidia GeForce GT 720, AMD Radeon HD 7610M, or Intel UHD 630. |
| Moderate | CPU: Intel Core i7-4790 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600. GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650, AMD Radeon RX 570, or Intel Arc A380. |
| Heavy | CPU: Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600X. GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 8GB, AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT, or Intel Arc A580. |
These are examples from the project’s requirements page, not purchase recommendations or a promise of a particular frame rate. The PCSX2 2.8 release notes say suggested requirements were reverted to earlier values on September 3, 2026, after performance improvements. For that reason, consult the live requirements page rather than relying on older copied requirement lists.

| Build | Update pattern and fit |
|---|---|
| Stable | Updates every several months. Suits users who prefer fewer update prompts and lower regression risk. |
| Nightly | Updates continually. Suits users who want improvements sooner or intend to help with development support, with greater exposure to changes that may cause regressions. |
Windows
- Download the Stable installer or a portable build from the official download page. Portable versions are available for both Stable and Nightly.
- If you use the installer, follow its prompts to complete installation. For a portable build, extract it and run PCSX2 from the extracted folder.
- Install the current x64 Visual C++ runtime if it is not already installed; Windows PCSX2 requires it.
macOS
- Download the macOS application bundle from the official page.
- Extract the bundle, then move the PCSX2 application into Applications.
Linux
The project officially supports AppImage and Flatpak. Follow the Linux instructions linked from the official Running PCSX2 guide. Flatpak’s sandboxing can cause file-access problems, so if PCSX2 cannot see a BIOS or game file, check its file permissions and the project’s troubleshooting guidance.
Where do you get the PS2 BIOS?
You must dump the BIOS from your own PlayStation 2. The PCSX2 project says the BIOS is proprietary software, does not provide a replacement, and that PCSX2 cannot run games without one. Do not download a BIOS image from an unofficial site.

The project’s BIOS setup guide describes two parts: first enable the PS2 to run a dumper, then run the BIOS-dumper utility. It discusses FreeMcBoot, a memory-card softmod, and FreeDVDBoot, which uses a DVD. Compatibility varies by console model: the guide says FreeMcBoot supports all fat models and all but the newest slim models, while FreeDVDBoot supports many slim models and some fat models. Check your model against the current guide before choosing a method.
Prepare a USB drive for the documented transfer route
- Back up anything on the USB flash drive you plan to use. Formatting erases its contents; carefully verify the selected drive before proceeding.
- For the guide’s USB method, use an MBR-partitioned drive with a FAT32 filesystem.
- Follow the official guide to place and run the dumper, then transfer the resulting BIOS files to the PC.
- In PCSX2’s first-run setup, point the BIOS selector to the folder containing the dump and complete the setup prompts.
The USB route is a transfer option, not an emulator requirement. If the PS2 utility does not detect your drive, the official guide suggests trying another one, preferably USB 2.0; compatibility can vary.

Can you use PS2 discs on a PC?
Yes. PCSX2 can play a PS2 game directly from a physical disc, or you can make a backup file from your own disc and load that file. A DVD/CD-capable optical drive is needed to read or back up physical media, but not if you already have a usable backup made from your own disc. The project’s game and disc guide explains both routes.
| Approach | What you need | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Play from disc | Your PS2 disc and a suitable optical drive in the PC. | No disc backup step, but the drive must be available whenever you play. |
| Make and load a backup | Your PS2 disc, a DVD/CD-capable optical drive, and software to create the image. | Creates a game file to load from the PC; dumping is optional. |
The project describes PS2 discs as unencrypted DVDs or CDs and says a standard drive that supports the relevant DVD and CD media can read them. It describes disc dumping as straightforward and not harmful to the media. An imperfect dump can cause problems such as freezes at loading screens; using a lower drive speed takes longer but can improve the likelihood of an exact copy.

For Windows, the official guide documents MPF and ImgBurn. Its ImgBurn instructions warn that the official installer includes OpenCandy adware unless that offer is unchecked, and recommend obtaining it through Ninite. The guide’s MPF route avoids that specific installer issue. Check the live documentation for operating-system-specific dumping steps.
Connect and map a controller
- Connect your controller to the PC, or choose keyboard controls if you prefer.
- In PCSX2, open Settings > Controllers and select an input source. The project recommends SDL as a cross-platform option.
- Use Automatic Mapping for a compatible device, then test the buttons and sticks in the controller settings. Adjust any incorrect bindings there.
- If a particular game or device needs different bindings, create a per-game input profile; it can override the shared mapping.
Controller features are not universal. The official documentation currently identifies original DualShock 3 controllers as the only controllers compatible with pressure sensitivity. It also warns that some knockoff controllers or adapters install a buggy EZFRD64.dll driver that can cause PCSX2 crashes. Steam Input may create keyboard-mapping conflicts, so check its configuration if keyboard controls behave unexpectedly.

Start with default graphics settings, then adjust
Begin with PCSX2’s defaults and change one setting at a time for the game you are playing. Raising the internal resolution through upscaling can increase GPU demand, and blending accuracy also affects GPU load. The project does not establish one resolution multiplier that is best for every PC and game.
If a game has visual glitches, crashes, or performance problems, consult the official documentation and troubleshooting guidance and the game-specific compatibility information. Avoid assuming that a setting that fixes one title will be a universal fix.
