Overwatch 2’s Season 14 6v6 tests began on December 17, 2024, and January 21, 2025. The first was a fixed 2-2-2 Role Queue test, later extended through January 20; the second used a more flexible Min 1–Max 3 team limit. Both dates have passed, and Blizzard said the experiments would not automatically change the game’s main format.

When were the Overwatch 2 6v6 tests?

Blizzard announced two Season 14 experiments: 6v6 Role Queue was scheduled to run from December 17, 2024, through January 7, 2025, and Min 1–Max 3 was scheduled for January 21 through February 4, 2025, according to the December 17 report. Blizzard later extended Role Queue through January 20, then began Min 1–Max 3 on January 21, according to its January 7 forum update.

Experiment Announced schedule Format
6v6 Role Queue December 17, 2024–January 7, 2025; later extended through January 20, 2025 Two Tanks, two Damage, and two Supports per team
Min 1–Max 3 January 21–February 4, 2025 At least one player in each role and no more than three in any role

How the two formats differed

6v6 Role Queue: fixed 2-2-2 teams

Players selected a role before entering the queue, and each match had two Tank players, two Damage players, and two Support players on each side. The fixed composition made team roles predictable, while role selection constrained matchmaking to those slots.

Min 1–Max 3: more role flexibility

Each team had to keep at least one player in every role, but could have as many as three Tanks, three Damage players, or three Supports. Players could switch roles during a match only if another teammate remained in the role they were leaving. That allowed more varied compositions than 2-2-2 while preserving a minimum presence in each role.

Why Blizzard tested 6v6—and what the results could mean

Blizzard framed the 5v5-versus-6v6 debate as a set of trade-offs rather than a single problem with an obvious answer. Its considerations included queue times, role imbalances, pressure on Tank players, team-fight pacing, player freedom, and variety between matches. In an official Director’s Take, Overwatch director Aaron Keller cautioned that “the result or success of these experiments doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re going to be changing the main format of the game.”

Blizzard’s January 7 update also said standard-format balance changes did not apply to the 6v6 mode. The experiments therefore provided a separate way to assess the formats rather than a promise that the main game would switch to 6v6.

These were not Overwatch: Classic events

The Season 14 experiments tested 6v6 rules in Overwatch 2. They were separate from Overwatch: Classic, a limited-time recreation of an earlier game state. The two may both evoke older Overwatch, but they were different modes with different purposes.

What happened after the Season 14 tests?

6v6 Open Queue with Perks

Blizzard’s Season 15 midseason update says 6v6 Open Queue with Perks ran from March 18 to April 21, 2025, temporarily replacing 5v5 Open Queue in ranked and unranked play. That later event means the Season 14 schedule was not the last 6v6 activity documented by Blizzard.

Flex Queue and Dynamic Queue

A later Director’s Take described two more experiments: Flex Queue, scheduled for July 16–19, and Dynamic Queue, scheduled for July 30–August 2. The article’s publication context is not established here, so those dates are presented as written rather than assigned a calendar year.

  • Flex Queue: Teams started with at least one Tank, three flexible Damage players, and two Supports. One Damage player at a time could switch to Tank.
  • Dynamic Queue: The intended composition was 2-2-2, with Flex Queue used when Tank availability was insufficient.

Blizzard described those later experiments as a way to learn, not as a guarantee that the main format would change.
