There is no verified evidence that Owlcat Games has regained control of Pathfinder: Kingmaker. In a January 29, 2025 Q&A, Owlcat said the rights remained with its publisher after the studio became independent in 2019, and that it could not control or update the game. Owlcat described the chances of reacquiring the rights as “slim at best” at that time. That statement does not establish what may have changed since, so the claim that Owlcat controls the game again remains unverified as of October 8, 2026.
What Owlcat said about the rights
Owlcat developed Pathfinder: Kingmaker while it was part of a larger publishing company. In its official Q&A published January 29, 2025, the studio said that after it went independent in 2019, “the rights remained with the publisher.” Owlcat added that it did not receive revenue from the game, had no control over what happened to it, and could not make updates. It also said it had tried to reclaim the rights without success.

Asked whether it planned to reacquire the game, Owlcat replied that the chances were “slim at best” at the time of the Q&A. These are Owlcat’s statements about the situation in January 2025; they do not rule out a later change, but they are not evidence that one occurred.
Why independence did not mean Owlcat owned the game
Owlcat announced in 2019 that it and parent company MY.GAMES had agreed to change their cooperation format, with Owlcat proceeding as an independent studio. The announcement said MY.GAMES would remain a strategic partner and investor. It did not say that the Kingmaker rights had transferred to Owlcat. You can read the 2019 announcement on the game’s official site.
#1 Best Overall
- Seven Fully Detailed Companions - Complete NPCs inspired by the Kingmaker video game, each with personalized adventures and extensive backstories for enhanced campaign storytelling
- Comprehensive Survival Systems - Extensive rules for camping, cooking magical meals, weather hazards including blizzards, flash floods, tornadoes, and supernatural storms
- Abundant Character Options - Over a dozen new feats, nearly a dozen spells, ten alchemical and magical items, plus three dozen exploration and downtime activities
- Universal Campaign Enhancement - Perfect expansion for Kingmaker Adventure Path or any Pathfinder campaign requiring wilderness exploration and companion mechanics

“Developer,” “publisher,” and “rights holder” describe different roles. Owlcat is identified as Kingmaker’s developer, but development credit alone does not show who owns or controls the game’s rights. Likewise, a studio becoming independent does not by itself establish that rights to a previously developed game changed hands.
What the 2025 publisher changes do—and do not—show
On January 24, 2025, Game World Observer reported that MY.GAMES subsidiary Knights Peak had announced global sales of more than two million copies. The article also described publishing changes from Prime Matter to MY.GAMES and then Knights Peak. That reporting documents ongoing publishing activity; it does not establish a transfer of the game’s rights to Owlcat.

A change in the company publishing a game is not, on its own, proof of a change in ownership or control. The sales milestone is not evidence that Owlcat regained the rights either. The Game World Observer report attributes the milestone to MY.GAMES and does not confirm an Owlcat rights transfer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the claim that Owlcat has control again true?
Not on the available evidence. Owlcat’s latest relevant first-party statement in the cited sources says the rights remained with the publisher and reacquisition looked unlikely in January 2025. No later rights-transfer confirmation is established by those sources. The official Pathfinder: Kingmaker page identifies Owlcat as the creator and offers a route to buy the game, but that does not establish present-day ownership or control.

Because the statement and reporting cited here date from 2025, they cannot settle whether a transfer happened afterward. As of October 8, 2026, the specific claim that Owlcat has regained control should be treated as unverified unless Owlcat or the rights holder confirms a later change.
