Nintendo’s May 2024 commitment to announce a successor to Nintendo Switch within the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, was fulfilled: the company named the system Nintendo Switch 2 on January 16, 2025, announced a June 5, 2025 release date on April 2, and launched it that day.
What did Nintendo announce in May 2024?
Nintendo’s fiscal-year results materials in May 2024 placed its planned announcement of a Switch successor within the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025. That was a deadline for announcing the system, not a promise that the console itself would launch by that date. The materials also said the fiscal-year hardware sales forecast did not include sales of the successor system. Nintendo’s May 8, 2024 financial results briefing provides the fiscal-year context.
