Players pointing out missing features in Ninja Gaiden 2 Black have a factual basis—but Black is not simply the 2008 Xbox 360 game with upgraded graphics. Team NINJA’s comparison confirms that Black omits online co-op and rankings, Ninja Race, and two bosses found in earlier versions, while changing combat balance and story structure and adding content of its own.
Which features are missing from Ninja Gaiden 2 Black?
Team NINJA’s official comparison lists these omissions from Ninja Gaiden 2 Black:
- Online co-op and rankings: Online features from Ninja Gaiden 2 and Ninja Gaiden Σ2 are unavailable. Black’s Team/Tag Missions still offer co-op, but the partner is an NPC, not another player. Team NINJA’s comparison distinguishes online co-op for the PS3 version of Sigma 2 from NPC co-op in Black.
- Ninja Race: The mode is absent from Black. Team NINJA’s comparison lists five maps for Σ2 and Σ2 PLUS.
- Two bosses: The Giant Buddha Statue: Hatensoku and the Statue of Liberty are not in Black. The Dark Dragon is listed for Black and the other compared editions.
- Costume sets: Black lists four sets for Ryu and three each for Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel. The Sigma editions list higher counts for all four characters, with the totals varying by edition. Counts do not establish that every individual costume appeared in every version.
Team NINJA summarizes the online omissions directly: “Online features such as ranking and co-op play, which were included in NINJA GAIDEN 2 and NINJA GAIDEN Σ2, are not available in this title.”
How Black compares with the original and Sigma versions
“Original Ninja Gaiden 2” refers to the June 2008 Xbox 360 release. The other relevant versions are Ninja Gaiden Σ2, released for PS3 in October 2009, and Ninja Gaiden Σ2 PLUS, released for PS Vita in February 2013. Those are distinct editions; a feature listed for one should not automatically be attributed to all the others.

| Feature | Ninja Gaiden 2 Black | Earlier versions, as specified by Team NINJA |
|---|---|---|
| Online co-op and rankings | Unavailable; Team/Tag Mission co-op uses an NPC | Online ranking and co-op are identified as features of the original and Σ2; the chart specifies online co-op for PS3 Σ2 |
| Team/Tag Missions | 35 missions, with NPC co-op | Not stated as a directly comparable count in the cited comparison |
| Ninja Race | Not included | Five maps are listed for Σ2 and Σ2 PLUS |
| Chapters | 17 | 14 in the original Xbox 360 game |
| Difficulty levels | Five | Four in the original Xbox 360 game |
| Bosses | Does not include Giant Buddha Statue: Hatensoku or Statue of Liberty; includes the Dark Dragon | The two omitted bosses are identified as earlier-version content; the Dark Dragon is listed across the compared editions |
These figures come from Team NINJA’s edition comparison. The chapter and difficulty counts are specifically compared with the original Xbox 360 release, not generalized to every Sigma edition.
Is Black more like the original Ninja Gaiden 2?
It is not a straightforward restoration of the Xbox 360 game. Team NINJA says it adjusted combat balance, including damage and enemy placement, and the comparison gives Black 17 chapters against 14 in the original. Enemy counts and difficulty therefore should not be assumed to match the 2008 release.
Rank #2
- This is the definitive edition of the NINJA GAIDEN 2, which includes the addition of playable characters and battle support features
Black also incorporates elements from later spin-offs, makes Momiji, Ayane, and Rachel playable, and uses Unreal Engine 5. It has Hero Play Style and a dismemberment toggle. Those changes make it a distinct version rather than a one-to-one remake of the original.
What Black adds and what it keeps
Black’s feature set includes five difficulty levels, Chapter Challenge, Ninja Records, and 35 Team/Tag Missions. The missions retain a co-op-style option, but play is with an NPC rather than online with another person. Its expanded chapter count and playable characters are among the clearest differences from the original release.

Some features arrived after launch. Team NINJA’s update log records an update dated 02.12.2025 that added New Game+, Photo Mode, and an option to hide the projectile weapon. It also notes changes to enemy HP and counts in selected chapters, an adjustment to Ayane’s damage, and fixes. The date is reproduced as shown in the update log; readers should consult the official update page for the current listing.
Which version should you choose?
The versions trade different things, so the better fit depends on what matters to you:
Rank #4
- Everyone plays at the same time in a frantic battle to be the last Ninja Standing!
- Contains Core Game & Genin Pack Expansion!
- 10 playable Ninjas!
- 2-6 players
- 15+ min. playtime
- Choose Black if you want the Unreal Engine 5 presentation, its 17-chapter structure, the additional playable characters, and current-platform availability.
- Look to the earlier editions if online co-op or rankings, Ninja Race, the Giant Buddha Statue: Hatensoku, the Statue of Liberty, or their larger costume-set counts are priorities. Availability depends on the platform and edition; the comparison identifies the original as Xbox 360, Sigma 2 as PS3, and Sigma 2 PLUS as PS Vita.
- Do not treat NPC co-op as online co-op. Black’s 35 Team/Tag Missions remain playable with an AI partner, but that does not restore the online mode or rankings.
Where is Ninja Gaiden 2 Black available?
Team NINJA lists Black for Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Store, Steam, and PlayStation 5, and describes it as digitally available only. The PlayStation product page gives January 23, 2025 as the PS5 release date and currently describes the game as single-player. Check the Team NINJA product page and PlayStation listing for platform-specific availability details.
What players’ complaints do—and do not—show
Community posts raise concerns about missing costumes, Ninja Race, bosses, and leaderboards, but those are individual discussions, not a representative measure of player opinion. The developer’s comparison independently confirms the feature differences; it does not establish how widely players object to them.
