Nintendo’s October 2024 Nintendo Switch Online Playtest Program tested an unspecified new service feature. Leaked program materials later described a collaborative experience built around developing a vast planet, but Nintendo did not confirm that concept as an official game. The limited test has ended.
What Nintendo officially announced
Nintendo announced a test of an unspecified new feature for Nintendo Switch Online. Its public description did not identify the software, explain its gameplay, or say it was a commercial game. Contemporary coverage reported that applicants needed an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, and that participation was limited to selected applicants.
The program was a historical, time-limited test, not an open game anyone can access by buying a Switch or subscribing now. The official support page currently redirects to Nintendo’s regional selector, so it does not establish current access or availability details.
What the leaked materials reportedly described
On October 21, 2024, reports about updated program-page materials described a shared world where players worked together to develop a massive planet through creativity and gathered resources. According to Nintendo Everything’s account of the leaked images, new lands, enemies, and resources would appear as players progressed.

Beacons and developing land
The leaked materials reportedly described Beacons as emitting healing light that purified and developed land. These are details attributed to the leaked images as reported by Nintendo Everything, not confirmed specifications from Nintendo.
Dev Core as a hub
The same coverage described Dev Core as a gathering place where players could meet, level up, and obtain items. This, too, comes from reported leak material rather than an official Nintendo feature list.

What remains unconfirmed
The distinction between the announcement and the leak matters: Nintendo confirmed a test of a new Switch Online feature, while the planet-building premise and its mechanics appeared in leaked materials reported by outlets. Nintendo did not confirm that the software was a released or officially announced game in the coverage available here.
Some reports characterized the concept as an “MMO” or compared it to Minecraft. Those are media interpretations, not a Nintendo-confirmed genre, product identity, or positioning. The leak does not establish that Nintendo was making a Minecraft rival or that the software was intended for Switch 2.

The 2024 test and the later repeat
Coverage of the leaked materials gave conflicting one-day differences for the original test window: October 23–November 5 or October 24–November 6, 2024. The available official information does not resolve that discrepancy, so neither date range should be treated as definitive here. What is established is that the test selected applicants and is over.
GamesRadar later reported a 2025 repeat and quoted Nintendo describing it as a test of the same service as the October 2024 program. That later test should not be confused with the original, and it did not confirm or deny the leaked software details. For the leak’s mechanics, Nintendo Everything’s reporting provides the specific descriptions; Insider Gaming also reported leaked text about developing a planet, discovering resources, and Beacons, though its rendering appears to contain transcription errors.

No. The 2024 Playtest Program was a limited historical test, not a currently available game. A Switch console or Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription does not provide access to a test that has ended. Nintendo’s announcement and program details are summarized in its program support page, which currently redirects to a regional selector.
