Updated October 8, 2026. PAYDAY 3 is a co-op first-person heist shooter built around planning jobs and choosing stealth or a loud approach, with solo play also presented as an option. It is a more complete package than it was at launch: Starbreeze’s September 2026 anniversary update added every previously separate paid heist DLC to the base game and introduced several new systems. That makes the game easier to recommend to players interested in its heists, but it does not establish that matchmaking, performance or the solo experience are now flawless.
Is PAYDAY 3 worth playing now?
PAYDAY 3 is worth considering if you want a heist shooter whose central appeal is replaying jobs with different approaches, especially with friends. The strongest reason to revisit it is the September 23, 2026 3rd Anniversary Year Update: Starbreeze says all previously separate paid heist DLC became part of the base game at no extra cost, giving base-game owners the same heist catalogue and reducing the risk of friends having different DLC access. The base price was unchanged, according to the publisher. Starbreeze’s announcement describes this as part of the game’s largest update.

That expanded package is not the same as a verified clean bill of health. The available evidence does not establish current matchmaking reliability, platform-specific performance, or how well solo play holds up across the full catalogue. Treat those as live issues to check against recent player reports for your platform rather than assuming the update resolved them.
What changed after launch?
Starbreeze’s anniversary update rolled out September 23, 2026, on Steam, PlayStation, Xbox and Epic Games Store. Its official summary lists these additions and changes: PAYDAY’s news index also lists subsequent updates.

Starbreeze also says the preceding twelve months brought a substantive update every month, including Skills 2.0, Shopping Spree, reworked heists, contracts, quality-of-life changes, balance work and Unreal Engine 5.5. That is the publisher’s description of the year through September 23, 2026, not a promise that the same cadence will continue.
The paid-heist change matters most to groups
Before the anniversary update, some heists were separate paid DLC. Starbreeze says those heists are now in the base game without an increase to the base price. For a group deciding whether to play together, shared access to the heist catalogue removes one important DLC-ownership barrier. It does not mean every future item or optional purchase is free: the publisher announced a paid Brute Force Crimebond at $9.99 on September 23, 2026. That is an announced price on that date, not a guaranteed current price.

The latest listed hotfix
As of October 1, 2026, the official news index listed Update 3.9.2, a hotfix for issues arising from 3.9.1. Because the game continues to receive patches, check the official news page for updates published after that date before making a purchase based on a particular fix.
What kind of game is PAYDAY 3?
Starbreeze describes PAYDAY 3 as a first-person co-op heist shooter. Its official product description emphasizes choosing between stealth and guns-blazing play, dealing with hostages, and going solo or bringing friends; the choices affect how a heist plays. The core loop is to plan and execute jobs, collect loot, and develop skills and weapon proficiency. These are the game’s stated design goals, not independent findings about how well every approach works in practice.

Stealth or loud
The premise gives players two broad ways into a job: avoid detection and try to keep the operation quiet, or accept a fight and push through by force. The appeal is the possibility of changing the feel of a heist by changing approach. If you are choosing the game mainly for stealth, look for recent platform-specific player accounts before buying; the available evidence does not independently assess stealth balance or reliability.
Solo or co-op
Solo play is presented as an option, but the game is designed around co-op heists. If you plan to play alone, prioritize current reports about solo progression and difficulty. If you plan to play with a group, the newly shared base-game heist catalogue is a clear package improvement; current cross-play, account and online requirements should still be checked for the specific platforms involved.

What do the reviews say?
A current independent critic aggregate and a verified live Steam review score are not established here, so there is no defensible current consensus number to quote. Starbreeze’s September 23, 2026 announcement says Chief Studio Officer Jonas Skantz reported that Steam reviews passed 72 percent positive during the summer and had held since. That is a publisher-reported figure attributed to Skantz, not an independently captured current Steam statistic.
Use that statement as context for the publisher’s account of improving reception, not as a substitute for reading recent reviews. Player feedback can change with patches, and experiences may differ by platform, group size and whether you play solo or co-op.

- Recent stability: check reports for your platform and the latest patch, particularly if matchmaking or crashes would make the game a poor fit.
- How you will play: look for feedback that matches your intended mode—solo or co-op—and preferred approach, stealth or loud.
- Friends’ platforms and accounts: confirm current cross-play and account requirements for the platforms in your group. Starbreeze lists the anniversary rollout on Steam, PlayStation, Xbox and Epic Games Store, but that alone does not verify cross-play behavior.
- Regional platform listing: confirm edition contents, console generation, online requirements and account setup in your regional store. The PlayStation search result says a Starbreeze Nebula account is required and references Year 1 Edition, but the product page could not be verified for current details.
- Extra purchases: the previously separate paid heist DLC is now in the base game according to Starbreeze; optional paid content such as the announced Brute Force Crimebond may still be sold separately.
Verdict
PAYDAY 3 has a substantially broader base-game heist package and more systems than it had at launch, making October 2026 a better time to consider it than its original 2023 release window—particularly if you have friends to play with. The anniversary changes strengthen the value proposition, but they are not proof that every old concern about stability, matchmaking or solo play has disappeared. Check recent reports for your platform and mode, then decide based on the co-op heist loop rather than a publisher-reported review percentage.
