Possibly—but Sony has not confirmed a PS6 or its disc-drive design. Reports say the console could omit a built-in drive and offer a detachable unit, but they do not establish whether that accessory would play new PS6 games on disc, older PlayStation game discs, or movies.
What reports say about a PS6 disc drive
Tom’s Guide reported on September 9, 2025, that sources cited by Insider Gaming claimed the PS6 would have a detachable disc drive available at launch. Read the Tom’s Guide report. That article also noted Sony had not officially announced the PS6.
A later report by Tom’s Hardware described the PS6 as reportedly being developed without a built-in drive and characterized a possible external drive as an optional backward-compatibility accessory. Read the Tom’s Hardware report. The two accounts frame the accessory differently: one says it could be offered at launch, while the other links it to backward compatibility. Neither is a Sony specification.
These reports do not confirm that Sony will sell a PS6 drive, that new PS6 games will be released on disc, or which game generations or movie formats any accessory might support. No PS6 drive price, model number, release date, or compatibility list is confirmed by the cited coverage.

What Sony has confirmed about physical game discs
In a July 1, 2026 announcement, Sony said physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Sony said new games after that date will be available through PlayStation Store and retailers in digital formats only. The announcement concerns production of new game discs; it does not specify the PS6’s hardware design. Sony’s announcement says the transition has no impact on games “that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.”
Sony’s policy does not, by itself, establish whether a future console will read those existing discs. Nor does it resolve whether a PS6 drive, if one is offered, would support physical PS6 releases. Sony’s announcement says digital preference significantly outpaces physical discs but gives no percentage in the cited post. PC Gamer separately reported CFO Lin Tao saying that Sony does not consider the disc itself a strong point of differentiation and can coexist with PC games; that comment is not a PS6 hardware announcement. PC Gamer’s report
Sony’s detachable PS5 drive is precedent, not PS6 confirmation
Sony already sells a detachable drive, model CFI-ZDD1, for specified PS5 consoles. Sony’s product page says it works with PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro consoles, plays PS5 games and supported PS4 titles on Blu-ray, and supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD movie discs. Pairing the drive and console during setup requires an internet connection. See Sony’s PS5 Disc Drive product page.
Sony’s support instructions limit compatibility to PS5 CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups and also require an internet connection to pair the drive during setup. Check Sony’s compatibility and setup instructions. Those limits apply to the PS5 accessory; Sony has not said it will work with a PS6.

Will PS6 play PS5 or PS4 discs?
That is not established by the reports. A detachable drive being described as an option for backward compatibility is not a confirmed compatibility promise. The cited coverage does not say whether a possible PS6 drive would read PS5 or PS4 game discs, future PS6 discs, or movie discs.
Keep existing discs and the future production policy distinct: Sony says games released, or due to release, in disc format before January 2028 are unaffected by the change in production of new game discs. That statement does not guarantee that a PS6 will play them. Until Sony provides a compatibility list, the PS5 drive’s supported formats cannot be used to infer PS6 support.

What to check before choosing a PS6 configuration
If Sony confirms a disc-free model and an optional drive, the details that will determine its usefulness are:
- Whether the drive is bundled with a console or sold separately.
- Which PlayStation game-disc generations it supports, and whether it enables new PS6 releases on disc or only backward compatibility.
- Whether it reads movie discs, and whether setup requires an internet connection or console pairing.
- The total cost of the console and drive compared with any other confirmed configuration.
Those are unanswered questions, not known PS6 specifications. Sony’s current PS5 accessory demonstrates one way it has handled a detachable drive, but it does not answer them for the next console.
