Starting Pokémon FireRed or Pokémon LeafGreen? Use the games’ built-in Help, Teachy TV, and recap to learn as you go; keep a varied team and a few healing items; and save before choices that may be hard to reverse. If you’re playing the current Switch edition, remember that trading and battling are local wireless only—not online.

What should I know before starting?

FireRed and LeafGreen are route-based adventures: you explore, talk to people, battle, and work toward the next objective. You do not need to memorize every rule at the start. Nintendo’s original feature information describes several built-in aids for learning the game and catching up after a break.

Use Help when a control or term is unclear

Look for the in-game contextual Help prompt when you are unsure what to do. It can provide situation-dependent guidance, including information about controls and terminology. The prompt’s button may differ between the original Game Boy Advance release and Switch, so follow the on-screen control cues for your version rather than assuming a particular button. Nintendo’s feature overview describes the Help function.

Watch Teachy TV early

Teachy TV presents useful trainer knowledge in an educational-program style. It is a good place to get comfortable with the game’s vocabulary and basic ideas before you feel confident about battles and progression.

Use the recap after a break

If you return to a save after days or weeks away, check the recap feature before setting off. It reviews what happened before you suspended play, which can help you remember your recent progress and what you were doing.

How should I build a beginner team?

Give yourself more than one answer to a matchup

It is tempting to rely on a favorite, but keeping several Pokémon at usable levels gives you options when a battle does not suit that favorite. A mix of Pokémon types and move types can make awkward matchups easier to handle. Think of this as a flexible beginner habit, not a requirement for an optimal team.

Catch a few unfamiliar Pokémon

You do not have to catch every Pokémon you meet. Catching a few different species, however, gives you alternatives and a practical way to learn how types and moves interact. Keep a new catch if it offers a useful option or you simply want to try it; there is no need to treat any particular species as mandatory based on this general advice.

Carry supplies for longer stretches

Healing items are useful when you expect to spend time on a route or in an area without wanting to turn back. Check your supplies before setting out, and use them when they help you continue safely. This is a convenience, not a rule that every trip requires a particular item or quantity.

What do I do if I get stuck?

  • Check Help: Look for the contextual prompt if a control, term, or situation is confusing.
  • Talk to people: Conversations can offer hints about the story and where to go next.
  • Look around: Pay attention to the environment as you explore instead of assuming the next step is always obvious.
  • Review the recap: If you have been away from the game, use it to reorient yourself before continuing.
  • Save when convenient: Saving is a sensible precaution before a choice you may not be able to undo, especially before transferring Pokémon out of the game.

Which version should I choose?

Choose based on which Pokémon you most want to collect and whether you can trade locally with someone playing the other version. The official product and support information confirms that FireRed and LeafGreen are separate versions, but does not provide a complete list of their version-exclusive Pokémon. If completing a collection matters to you, check a reliable, up-to-date Pokédex reference for the specific Pokémon you want before choosing.

For the Switch editions, local trading is available, but online play is not. That means access to another nearby player may matter if trading is part of your collection plan.

How do trading and connectivity work on Switch?

Nintendo says the Switch editions replace the original games’ cable or adapter connectivity with built-in local wireless. The Wireless Club is on the second floor of a Pokémon Center; Nintendo says up to five players can connect there for trading, battling, or a minigame. Nintendo Support states, “Online play is not supported.” Nintendo Switch Online is not required to purchase or play these games. See Nintendo Support’s FireRed and LeafGreen FAQ and the Nintendo product page.

The Switch releases are digital; Nintendo says there are no plans for a physical release. In the Americas, Nintendo lists English, European French, and European Spanish editions and advises checking the language before purchase. These are separate language versions, rather than one edition with a selectable language. Nintendo lists Switch and Switch 2 support, handheld, tabletop, and TV modes, one player on one system, and local wireless for two to five players.

Nintendo describes the Switch releases as broadly the same in content as the original versions, while noting that some specifications differ. Do not assume that every event or connectivity feature works identically across GBA and Switch: the Switch product page, for example, describes the Sevii Islands and events involving Lugia, Ho-Oh, and Deoxys, while the connection method is different.

What should I know before transferring Pokémon to HOME?

For the Switch editions, treat a transfer from FireRed or LeafGreen to Pokémon HOME as one-way. Nintendo’s instructions say that eligible Pokémon in a selected game box move to HOME, Pokémon in the party cannot be transferred, and a Pokémon moved from these games cannot be returned to them. Check the selection carefully before confirming a transfer. See Nintendo’s Pokémon HOME transfer instructions.

Nintendo’s Switch product page says HOME linking begins in October 2026 and mentions a Celebi Mystery Gift after completing the relevant Pokédex in HOME. Availability and eligibility can change, so check the current product page and HOME instructions before making plans around that feature.
