A new report says Sony is believed to be considering backward compatibility with PS4 and PS5 games for the PS6, but it does not confirm that feature. The speculation traces to a leaked AMD presentation from 2023, and the report itself cautions that the specifications may have changed. Sony has not confirmed PS6 compatibility in the sources available here.
What the PS6 report says—and what it does not
Tom’s Guide’s report attributes the PS6 and handheld specifications it discusses to a leak from Moore’s Law Is Dead, based on a 2023 AMD presentation. The report says Sony is believed to be bringing PS4 and PS5 backward compatibility to the console. That is a secondhand account of leaked material, not a Sony announcement or a confirmed PS6 specification.
The age of the presentation matters: the report warns the details may have changed and are not necessarily final. The material therefore does not establish whether PS6 will play PS4 or PS5 games, how compatibility would work, or whether physical discs would be supported. It also does not establish PS6 editions, pricing, or a launch date.
What Sony has confirmed about PS5 compatibility
Sony’s current PS5 backward-compatibility guidance says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5. It lists six PS4-only titles that cannot be played: Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma Volume One, Just Deal With It!, Robinson: The Journey, We Sing, Hitman Go: Definitive Edition, and Shadwen. Sony says the list may change; it excludes demos, media, and non-game applications.

That is evidence about PS5, not a precedent that guarantees the same outcome on PS6. Sony’s October 9, 2020 launch-era Q&A said more than 99 percent of the 4,000-plus PS4 games would be playable on PS5 at launch. That statement described PS5 compatibility at the time; for current details, Sony’s support page is the more relevant reference.
How PS4 games and discs work on PS5 today
PS4 game access on PS5 depends partly on whether the game is digital or on disc. These are current PS5 rules and do not establish how a future PlayStation would handle ownership or media.

Sony does not say that PS6 will retain a disc drive, accept PS4 or PS5 discs, or carry forward digital entitlements. The leak report is not enough to answer whether upgrading would preserve access to a personal PlayStation library.

Sony says selected PS4 titles can benefit from Game Boost and may run at a higher or smoother frame rate on PS5. It also warns that functionality can differ and games may show errors or unexpected behavior. “Playable” therefore does not mean every title works exactly as it did on PS4.

PS VR games are among the PS4 games playable on PS5, but using PS VR requires the PS VR headset, PS4 Camera, and Camera adaptor. The PS5 HD Camera is not compatible with PS VR. Sony says the Camera adaptor is available at no purchase cost.

What PS4 owners can safely conclude
- The reported PS6 backward-compatibility feature remains unconfirmed and is based on a 2023 leak, not an official Sony specification.
- PS5 currently supports the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, with listed exceptions and possible differences in functionality.
