Not officially. A 2024 report attributed to Reuters said Sony selected AMD for an alleged PS6 chip contract, with backward compatibility among the considerations. Sony has not publicly confirmed a PS6 chip supplier or compatibility policy. Its confirmed AMD collaboration concerns graphics and gameplay machine-learning technology, not a named PS6 processor.
What the AMD–PS6 report actually says
BGR reported on September 16, 2024, attributing its account to Reuters: AMD reportedly won an alleged contract to supply a chip for Sony’s next console, and backward compatibility was among the considerations in the selection. That is reporting about a reported decision—not a Sony announcement or a published PS6 specification. BGR’s account also quotes an Intel spokesperson disputing the characterization: “We strongly disagree with this characterization but are not going to comment about any current or potential customer conversations.”
Sony’s public statements establish a real AMD relationship, but they do not confirm that AMD will supply the PS6 chip. On December 18, 2024, Sony’s Lead Architect Mark Cerny announced a deeper collaboration with AMD focused on machine-learning technology for graphics and gameplay. The announcement did not identify a console, chip, or backward-compatibility plan. Sony’s announcement
What Sony has confirmed about AMD and PlayStation
PS5 uses AMD hardware
Sony’s PS5 specifications list an AMD Ryzen Zen 2 CPU and an AMD Radeon RDNA 2-based graphics engine. Those are confirmed PS5 specifications, not evidence of the PS6’s architecture or supplier. Sony’s PS5 specifications

The newer collaboration is future-oriented, not a PS6 reveal
In an October 9, 2025 report, TechRadar quoted Cerny describing the collaboration’s technologies as existing “in simulation right now” and as potential technology for a future console in a few years. That points to exploratory work aimed at future hardware; it does not confirm a PS6 product, final chip, or compatibility feature. TechRadar’s report
Why an AMD chip would not guarantee backward compatibility
Using the same chip supplier across generations would not, on its own, establish which older games would run. A compatibility policy depends on hardware capability as well as system software, title-level validation, any required patches, and the limits Sony sets for supported games. PlayStation generations also need to be considered separately: evidence about PS4 games on PS5 does not establish support for PS3, PS2, or original PlayStation titles on a future console.

Sony’s PS5 experience illustrates the distinction. In March 2020, Sony said it expected the “overwhelming majority” of more than 4,000 PS4 titles to be playable on PS5 and described evaluating games title by title. That was a launch-era expectation and testing account, not a PS6 result. Sony’s March 2020 compatibility update
What PS5 compatibility tells us—and what it does not
Sony’s current support page says the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5, while identifying exceptions and warning of possible errors or missing functionality. The policy also has practical limits: disc-game access depends on having a PS5 with a disc drive, and some games may not support particular peripherals. These are PS4-to-PS5 rules; they do not predict PS6 support. Sony’s current PS5 backward-compatibility guidance

For PS6, Sony has not confirmed which generations or titles it might support, whether disc games would be included, or what controller and peripheral support would look like. No PS6-compatible title count is established by the cited materials.

| Question | What the available evidence establishes |
|---|---|
| Will AMD supply the PS6 chip? | Reported by BGR, attributing the account to Reuters; Sony has not confirmed it in the cited public materials. |
| Has Sony announced a PS6 compatibility policy? | No. The cited Sony materials describe PS4-to-PS5 compatibility, not a PS6 policy. |
| Does PS5’s AMD hardware establish PS6 compatibility? | No. It confirms PS5’s CPU and graphics specifications only. |
| Which PS4 or older games will run on PS6? | Not established in the cited materials. Sony’s PS5 compatibility figures apply to PS5. |
The most accurate takeaway is that AMD’s reported selection and a backward-compatibility rationale remain unconfirmed publicly by Sony. Sony has disclosed deeper AMD collaboration and documented broad—but qualified—PS4 support on PS5. Neither fact is a promise about PS6.
