Rare’s PS5 FAQ, published April 4, 2024, confirmed that Sea of Thieves would launch on PlayStation 5 on April 30, 2024. It said players need a Microsoft account, an existing active pirate character becomes playable after linking accounts, and the PS5 friends list can show Xbox friends alongside PSN friends for cross-play invitations. PlayStation also lists online play and a PlayStation Plus subscription as requirements for online play.
When did Sea of Thieves launch on PS5?
The PS5 version launched April 30, 2024. Rare published its FAQ on April 4, ahead of release; PlayStation’s product listing also gives April 30, 2024 as the release date.

What accounts do you need, and how does linking work?
A Microsoft account is required to play, including on PS5. Rare’s account-linking guidance says the link is permanent and pairs one Microsoft account with one PlayStation Network account. Choose carefully: the guidance does not describe this as a temporary connection you can freely swap later.
Rare’s FAQ described the requirement this way: “Whether you’re a seasoned pirate or just starting out, you’ll need to sign in with a Microsoft account to play Sea of Thieves.” (Rare’s PS5 FAQ, April 4, 2024.) Rare’s separate account-linking support page states the permanent one-to-one link.

Can you bring your existing pirate character to PS5?
Rare’s FAQ says an active pirate character becomes playable in the PS5 version once the PlayStation and Microsoft accounts are linked. That answers the core migration question for players who want to continue with an existing character.
The available FAQ information does not establish a blanket transfer guarantee for every cosmetic, currency balance, trophy, entitlement, or platform-specific feature. Treat character availability as the confirmed point; the FAQ excerpt does not settle those separate details.

Can PS5 players play with friends on Xbox or PC?
Rare said the in-game PS5 friends list displays Xbox friends as well as PSN friends, making it easier to invite people for cross-play. PlayStation’s product page also advertises cross-platform play. Together, those statements support playing across platforms and finding Xbox friends through the PS5 version.
The accessible FAQ information does not specify cross-play restrictions or how to opt out, so it cannot answer which configuration controls are available or how they work.

Does Sea of Thieves on PS5 require PS Plus?
Yes. PlayStation’s US product listing says online play is required and that a PS Plus subscription is required for online play. The same listing gives a capacity of up to 24 online players; that is PlayStation’s listed maximum, not a claim about how many players will be in every session.

The official listing identifies DualSense trigger-effect support. It does not say an additional controller is needed. It also lists accessibility options including button remapping, subtitles, visual and audio cue alternatives, practice mode, and chat transcription. These are product-page details, rather than answers to the 2024 FAQ’s account and migration questions.
