The “leaked” Pokémon Gen 10 starter images that drew criticism were never authenticated by the sources covering them. The designs circulated after descriptions of possible starters were already online, giving skeptics reason to wonder whether someone had turned those descriptions into fan art. The Pokémon Company has since officially revealed the Generation 10 first partners—Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua—but that announcement does not establish that the earlier images were genuine.
What the alleged starter leak showed
The story unfolded in two stages. On February 2, 2026, VICE reported that X user Light_88 had relayed a source’s impressions of three potential starters. The descriptions were subjective: the Grass starter was said to seem goofy or underwhelming at first but likely to grow on people; the Fire starter was described as very cute and a likely fan favorite; and the Water starter was called the standout.
Those remarks were not confirmed design details. VICE cautioned that the source was not definitive, and the Water starter’s supposed appeal was plainly a matter of opinion.
On February 18, alleged images began circulating. The Game Haus compared the images with the descriptions already in circulation and raised the possibility that a fan had made concepts to fit them. The report also criticized aspects of the artwork. Neither the images’ circulation nor their resemblance to the earlier descriptions proves that they came from an official source.

Why people were skeptical
The timing left open a straightforward alternative to a leak: once descriptions are public, an artist can use them as a prompt for plausible-looking starter concepts. That possibility was raised in coverage, not established as the images’ actual origin. The reporting did not resolve who created the images or provide independent corroboration that the designs came from Game Freak or The Pokémon Company.
Some of the skepticism was also aesthetic. The Game Haus author pointed to perceived stylistic issues, but that is commentary about the images—not an authentication test and not evidence that fans broadly disliked them. A Reddit discussion title captures one fan question, “Why do fake Pokemon/ ‘leaked Pokemon’ always look so off?” It illustrates how some fans framed the issue, not how widespread that view was.

What The Pokémon Company has officially confirmed
The official Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves website identifies Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua as the games’ first-partner Pokémon and provides their types, categories, abilities, and descriptions. These are confirmed starter details, separate from the provenance of the earlier images.

The official site says Winds and Waves are planned for simultaneous worldwide release in 2027, exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2. It describes an open world featuring islands and ocean; its screenshots and footage are labeled as coming from a game in development and not final.

What the roasting does—and doesn’t—tell us
The coverage establishes that alleged images circulated, that commentators compared them with descriptions already online, and that at least one report found aspects of the artwork questionable. It does not establish that the pictures were official, that they were broadly despised, or that public opinion settled on a verdict.
Later discussion of Browt is a separate story. In a February 28, 2026 report, GamesRadar+ described fan art and affectionate jokes about the officially revealed Pokémon, including people calling it ugly in a cute way. That reaction shows how an awkward design can inspire affection as well as jokes; it does not validate the earlier images or measure the reaction to them.

How to assess a future Pokémon leak
When an alleged design appears, three questions help separate a plausible rumor from a verified reveal:
- Provenance: Is there an original, attributable source, or only reposts and screenshots?
- Timing: Did the images appear after descriptions or other clues that could have served as a template?
- Independent corroboration: Is there consistent material from another source, rather than multiple accounts repeating the same unverified claim?
For these images, the February coverage raised the timing and provenance questions but did not answer them. The official starter reveal confirms Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua—not the authenticity of designs that circulated beforehand.
