You can play both classic Marathon shooters for free: Steam lists Classic Marathon and Classic Marathon 2 as free-to-play games. They are the community-maintained releases of Bungie’s 1994 and 1995 games—not the newer Marathon title. You can also download Aleph One, the engine used to run them, from the project’s site.

On Steam, search for Classic Marathon and Classic Marathon 2. Each listing shows the game as free to play and provides a “Play Game” option. Steam dates the community-maintained Classic Marathon release to May 10, 2024, and Classic Marathon 2 to July 12, 2024.

The games are distinct from the newer game titled Marathon. The first is Bungie’s 1994 science-fiction FPS, in which you defend a colony ship; the 1995 sequel puts you in the service of the rogue AI Durandal.
Choose Steam or download from Aleph One
| Route | What you get | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | Free-to-play listings for both Classic Marathon games. | Use the individual game pages to install through Steam and check the current requirements for your operating system. |
| Aleph One project site | Engine downloads for macOS, Windows, and Linux Flatpak, plus ready-to-run downloads on the Marathon page. | The engine download instructions require game data files, called scenarios. The Marathon page provides brief installation and launch instructions. |
For the standalone route, begin with the Aleph One project site. Its engine page reports version 1.11, released August 29, 2025, and explains the scenario requirement. The Marathon downloads page offers ready-to-run builds for macOS, Windows, and Linux Flatpak, along with standalone game files for Aleph One 1.1 or later.
#1 Best Overall
If you encounter old file-by-file instructions, Bungie.org’s Trilogy Release archive includes legacy Marathon 2 files and points readers to Aleph One for complete playable scenarios. It also notes that the original Marathon files need conversion before they work with Aleph One. For a current setup, the Steam listings or Aleph One’s present downloads are the more direct starting points.
Modern features and system requirements
Both Steam listings advertise optional widescreen HUD support, 3D filtering and perspective, positional audio, and 60-plus-fps interpolation. These are enhancements, not claims about the original games’ default presentation; consult each listing for details.
Steam lists Windows, macOS, and SteamOS/Linux for both releases, with 64-bit processor and 4 GB RAM minimums. Other requirement details differ between the listings, and specifications can change, so check the relevant Classic Marathon or Classic Marathon 2 page for your OS before installing.

Aleph One’s engine is licensed under GPL 3. That does not mean the game data is also GPL-licensed or that all Marathon content may be redistributed freely. The Aleph One project says Bungie retains copyright and control of game-content distribution, while noting a limited license for Aleph One’s distribution. See the project’s FAQ and licensing information for the distinction.
