Remastered is a community-made project, not an official Nintendo remaster. To play it, you need to supply an original Super Mario Bros. NES ROM; the project describes Windows and Linux downloads, with macOS instructions provided through an unofficial fork. If you want Nintendo’s official version instead, the original game is included in the NES Classics collection on Switch with a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
What Super Mario Bros. Remastered is
The project’s GitHub README presents Super Mario Bros. Remastered as a community remake and celebration of the original games—not a Nintendo release. Its developers describe recreations of Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. Special, and All Night Nippon: Super Mario Bros..

The README also advertises new levels, custom modes and characters, resource packs, and a level editor, as well as changes to physics and level design. These are project-described features, not independently verified here. The project explicitly says it does not replace the original Super Mario Bros. games.
How to get the project running
- Check the project README. Use the download and setup information in the public repository for your platform.
- Get the required game ROM separately. The README says an original SMB1 NES ROM is required. The project page does not provide a lawful acquisition guide, so verify that you have the right to use any ROM you supply; avoid unverified download sites.
- Install and launch on Windows or Linux. The README describes downloading a release archive, extracting it, and running the application.
- Treat the macOS route as unofficial. The README points macOS users to an unofficial fork, rather than presenting it as an official project build.
- Check Godot’s requirements for your system. The project points to Godot engine requirements but does not state numerical minimum or recommended hardware specifications.
Choose between the fan project and Nintendo’s official version
| Play path | What it offers | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Super Mario Bros. Remastered | Community-described game recreations, added modes and characters, resource packs, and a level editor. | Requires an original SMB1 NES ROM supplied by the player. Windows and Linux releases are described; macOS instructions use an unofficial fork. The project is not a Nintendo release. |
| Super Mario Bros. on Nintendo Switch | Nintendo lists the original game in its NES Classics collection, playable in TV, tabletop, and handheld modes subject to the listing’s system and compatibility conditions. | A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required. NES-style wireless controllers are optional, not required. |
Nintendo’s US NES Classics listing is the official route if you want Nintendo-distributed access to the original game. Availability and membership terms may differ by region, so check the listing for your country.

No. Nintendo presents its NES-style wireless controllers as an optional accessory for the NES Classics collection. The cited sources do not establish that those controllers work with the fan project, so do not assume compatibility if you choose that route.
