The $140 million figure belongs to Fund III, announced in 2024. The mismatch appears in a GamesBeat headline, but the article’s body identifies the $140 million vehicle as the third fund and Fund II as $135 million.
How much did Play Ventures raise for Fund II?
Play Ventures closed Fund II at $135 million in April 2021, according to contemporaneous reports from Game Developer and PocketGamer.biz. The firm said the close brought assets under management across its first two funds to $175 million.
That $175 million was the combined AUM reported for Funds I and II at the time; it is not the size of Fund II alone.
Why does $140 million appear in the headline?
The $140 million figure refers to Play Ventures’ third fund, Fund III, announced in 2024. GamesBeat’s report, despite its headline, describes the raise as the third fund and says Fund II was $135 million. The firm’s official news page likewise lists Fund II at $135 million and the later $140 million vehicle as Fund III.

| Fund | Reported amount | Year | AUM context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fund I | $30 million | 2018 | GamesBeat later reported Fund II at $135 million; the 2021 close brought reported combined AUM across the first two funds to $175 million. |
| Fund II | $135 million | 2021 | $175 million combined AUM across the first two funds, as reported at the close. |
| Fund III | $140 million | 2024 | $450 million AUM after Fund III, according to GamesBeat. |
Fund I and Fund II amounts and chronology are reported in GamesBeat’s report; its body also gives the Fund III and post-fund AUM figures. The headline’s “second fund” wording is the error, not the $140 million figure itself.
What was Fund II intended to invest in?
The 2021 announcement described Fund II as focused on early-stage game developers and gaming-service startups around the world. Play Ventures singled out India and Latin America as ecosystems it was especially interested in expanding into. At the time, Game Developer reported that the firm had invested in 24 game companies across 10 countries since December 2018.

How does Play Ventures describe its scope now?
The firm’s current website describes a broader scope that includes game studios, consumer apps, and related business-to-business infrastructure and services. That is the firm’s present-day positioning, not a substitute for the specific early-stage games and gaming-services remit announced for Fund II in 2021.
