Ninja Gaiden 4 was announced at Xbox Developer_Direct on January 23, 2025, and launched on October 21, 2025. The reveal introduced Yakumo as a new protagonist, confirmed Ryu Hayabusa’s return, and described the game as a direct sequel to Ninja Gaiden 3. It is now available on Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5, with additional Xbox access options listed at launch.
When was Ninja Gaiden 4 announced?
Xbox announced Ninja Gaiden 4 during its Developer_Direct broadcast on January 23, 2025. Microsoft called 2025 “The Year of the Ninja” and revealed the game alongside the same-day release of Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. Xbox described Ninja Gaiden 4 as the first new mainline entry in 13 years—a gap between numbered mainline games, not an absence of franchise releases in the meantime. Xbox’s announcement and interview covered the reveal and its early development status.
What did the Xbox Developer_Direct reveal?
A new protagonist and a returning rival
The game is positioned as a direct sequel to Ninja Gaiden 3, set after a significant passage of time. The announcement introduced Yakumo, a young ninja prodigy, as the new central character and confirmed that series veteran Ryu Hayabusa would return. The story moves to a transformed, near-future Tokyo.
A Tokyo under supernatural threat
Official descriptions place the story in a city enduring an endless rain of miasma following the resurrection of an ancient enemy. That premise sets the stage for the new protagonist’s role while bringing Ryu back into the story.

The current Xbox listing credits PlatinumGames Inc. and KOEI TECMO GAMES CO., LTD. as developers and Xbox Game Studios Publishing as publisher; PlatinumGames’ own page also credits PlatinumGames and Team NINJA. Team NINJA is Koei Tecmo’s studio/team, not a separate company. Xbox’s product listing and PlatinumGames’ game page provide the current credits.
Is Ninja Gaiden 4 out yet?
Yes. Ninja Gaiden 4 launched on October 21, 2025. It is no longer an upcoming release. Xbox’s launch coverage described it as an Xbox Play Anywhere title and said it was available day one with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass at launch. The current Xbox listing says the game is included with Game Pass, but subscription eligibility and regional availability can change; check your local Xbox store and plan details before relying on that access route. Xbox’s launch article has the launch-era access details.
What platforms can you play Ninja Gaiden 4 on?
Official listings identify Xbox Series X|S, PC/Windows and PlayStation 5. Xbox’s launch article also lists Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud and supported ROG Xbox Ally handhelds. These labels describe different ways to access the game, not separate console platforms; cloud and handheld access depend on the relevant service, device support and availability.

The official descriptions frame the combat as a blend of Team NINJA’s approach and PlatinumGames’ action style. Yakumo uses Bloodbind Ninjutsu to transform weapons. Xbox’s launch coverage also describes switching between Base Form and Bloodraven Form and using Bloodbath Kill under specific conditions. These are combat systems and options, not a claim that the game has one fixed difficulty.
Difficulty options and assists
Xbox’s launch article lists three primary modes: Hero, Normal and Hard. It also describes assist functions such as automatic evasion and defense, as well as a dedicated training mode. These options let players choose a mode and make use of assists; they do not establish that the game is easy or that every challenge can be bypassed.

What did the developers say at the announcement?
In the January 23, 2025 Xbox Wire interview, PlatinumGames producer/director Yuji Nakao said, “The game is currently about 70–80% complete, and we’ve entered the polishing phase.” That was a development estimate at announcement time, not a current measure of the finished game.
In the same announcement interview, Team NINJA head Fumihiko Yasuda said, “NINJA GAIDEN 4 is an action game at heart, and we are looking into ways to give you opportunities to get hands-on experience, so please stay tuned.” The game has since launched; the comment reflects what the team said during the reveal, not a current promise about future access.
