Plantmancer leads this ranking of the ten base-game classes, but the best pick depends on whether you value healing, damage, range, mobility or control.

Plantmancer is the strongest all-around class in South Park: The Fractured But Whole because healing, attack buffs, charm and revival remain useful across many fights. For players who value damage above support, Assassin is the better pick. This ranking covers the game’s ten base classes; the order is an editorial assessment of how consistently each kit contributes, not an official balance tier list.

How this ranking works

The order weighs five things: mobility and attack reach, single-target and area damage, status effects and battlefield control, defensive or healing utility, and how often abilities stay useful across different encounters. The game’s grid-based combat makes positioning matter, while the New Kid can change class and mix abilities. That means a class can be valuable as a source of one or two abilities even if its complete kit ranks lower. Twinfinite’s 2023 guide offers a similar ten-class ordering, while the abilities and roles described in class guides help explain the relative strengths and trade-offs. Twinfinite’s class ranking and Gamepressure’s class guide provide reference points.

The base-game classes, ranked

1. Plantmancer

Plantmancer earns the top spot by helping the whole team do more and survive longer. Its broad healing also boosts attack, and it can charm enemies to disrupt the opposing side. Its ultimate can heal and revive allies, making it especially valuable when a battle has gone wrong. It is not simply a defensive choice: the combination of support and disruption can change the shape of a fight. Twinfinite’s guide and GameRevolution’s class overview describe these strengths.

2. Assassin

Choose Assassin for an offense-first approach. Its strong damage and bleeding give it a clear way to pressure targets, while invisibility can help it avoid attention. It is a compelling class for players who want to focus on taking enemies out rather than spending turns on team support. Its strengths are most apparent when teammates can provide protection or other support. Twinfinite’s ranking identifies it as a leading pure-damage option; GameRevolution’s overview covers its damage and concealment tools.

#1 Best Overall
South Park: The Fractured but Whole - PlayStation 4
  • AUTHENTIC SOUTH PARK : From the creators of South Park, Trey Parker & Matt Stone, comes the sequel to South Park: The Stick of Truth
  • AN OUTRAGEOUS RPG ADVENTURE : Manipulate time & space on the battlefield and develop and refine your powers as you progress
  • A HERO’S ORIGIN REVEALED : Create your costume, craft your origin story & build out your unique superpowers as you progress
  • COON AND FRIENDS, ASSEMBLE : Recruit up to 12 heroes, including Mysterion, The Human Kite, and the infamous Coon himself
  • EXPLORE SOUTH PARK AT NIGHT : Save the town when the sun sets and South Park's seedy underbelly comes alive

3. Psychic

Psychic is a flexible support pick with ways to protect allies and unsettle enemies. It can shield teammates, confuse foes and lower their defense; its ultimate adds team healing and protection. Those tools give Psychic a place in fights where controlling danger or improving allies’ odds matters more than maximizing direct damage. Twinfinite and GameRevolution describe its defensive and disruptive abilities.

4. Blaster

Blaster is a dependable ranged attacker. Its long-line attacks make reach a core advantage, while burn damage and knockback add pressure beyond an immediate hit. That reach can be useful when positioning limits close-range options, and the class contributes to a variety of team setups. It is a straightforward choice for players who want to deal damage without relying on melee range. Twinfinite’s guide and GameRevolution’s overview note its range and damage tools.

5. Speedster

Speedster stands out for mobility and its access to an extra action, which can create useful tactical options. The trade-off matters: Double-Edge gives an extra action but costs the next turn, so it is a timing tool rather than a free permanent boost. Use it when the immediate action is worth giving up the following turn, rather than treating it as an automatic choice. Twinfinite and GameRevolution describe its mobility and action-economy trade-off.

  • Gold SteelBook Edition includes the complete South Park: The Fractured But Whole game, plus the Season Pass, and more!
  • A set of physical lithographic prints with art from South Park Digital Studios

6. Martial Artist

Martial Artist combines damage with unusual control over enemy placement. Knockback and reverse knockback let it reshape the battlefield, potentially opening or disrupting attack opportunities. Its ultimate can draw attacks and grant block, giving it a defensive role alongside its damage. It is a good fit when repositioning enemies is more useful than simply hitting the nearest target. Twinfinite’s ranking and GameRevolution’s overview detail its positioning and defensive functions.

7. Elementalist

Elementalist is a hybrid class whose value comes from combining control and support with damage. It can chill enemies, deal area damage, heal and improve attacks. That mix can make it more useful for shaping a fight or helping the team than for raw damage alone. Its placement below Martial Artist reflects the ranking’s emphasis on broad, consistent utility, not a claim that the class lacks useful tools. Twinfinite and GameRevolution describe its chill, area and support abilities.

8. Cyborg

Cyborg has a varied toolkit, including ways to pull enemies, boost defense and apply shock effects. The issue is overlap: those functions are useful, but other classes offer more focused versions of damage, control or support. Cyborg can still suit a build that needs a particular tool; it ranks lower as a complete, broadly useful package. Twinfinite’s ranking places it below Elementalist, and GameRevolution’s overview describes its abilities.

South Park: The Fractured but Whole - PlayStation 4 (Renewed)
  • AUTHENTIC SOUTH PARK – From the creators of South Park, Trey Parker & Matt Stone, comes the sequel to South Park: The Stick of Truth.
  • AN OUTRAGEOUS RPG ADVENTURE – Manipulate time & space on the battlefield and develop and refine your powers as you progress.
  • A HERO’S ORIGIN REVEALED – Create your costume, craft your origin story & build out your unique superpowers as you progress.
  • COON AND FRIENDS, ASSEMBLE! – Recruit up to 12 heroes, including Mysterion, The Human Kite, and the infamous Coon himself.
  • EXPLORE SOUTH PARK AT NIGHT – Save the town when the sun sets and South Park's seedy underbelly comes alive.

9. Gadgeteer

Gadgeteer can apply sustained pressure with a robot and turret, but those tools depend on their placement and survival. When a fight’s layout or enemy actions make it hard to keep them useful, the class becomes more situational than the higher-ranked options. Its lower position is about consistency across encounters, not the absence of a role for summoned support. Twinfinite and GameRevolution discuss its robot and turret.

10. Brutalist

Brutalist delivers strong close-range damage, and its single-target ultimate can hit hard. Its limitation is flexibility: restricted reach can make it harder to contribute when enemies are poorly positioned, while other characters can cover similar close-range functions. Last place means it is less consistently useful under this ranking’s broad criteria—not that it is ineffective in every fight. Twinfinite’s guide and GameRevolution’s overview describe its damage and range trade-off.

Which class should you choose?

Pick based on the role you want to fill, rather than treating the ranking as a permanent decision. The New Kid can change class and combine abilities, so an early choice does not lock you into one complete kit. The starting options are Speedster, Brutalist and Blaster; other classes unlock as the story progresses. Gamepressure’s class guide and GameRevolution’s overview cover the starting choices and class system.

  • Want to experiment with a hybrid? Mix abilities to cover the gaps in your preferred role instead of expecting one class to do everything.

What about the DLC classes?

This ranking covers the ten base-game classes, not the downloadable content classes. Bring the Crunch, announced by Ubisoft on July 31, 2018, adds the Final Girl class alongside a story campaign. Ubisoft says Final Girl’s traps and new combat tactics can be used in the wider adventure after the DLC campaign. Ubisoft’s Bring the Crunch announcement gives those details.

Netherborn is also identified as a DLC class in class guides and is associated with From Dusk Till Casa Bonita. Ubisoft lists that expansion among the game’s additional content, but its official page does not provide a detailed class breakdown. Ubisoft’s game page lists the additional content, and Gamepressure’s guide identifies Netherborn as a class.
